About MCV 1st Gala Sitting 2026

The 1st Gala Sitting of the Mainzer Carneval-Verein 1838 e.V. (MCV) is among the finest hall events of the entire Mainz Carnival campaign. In the imposing Electoral Palace, the city's baroque landmark, the oldest Mainz Carnival club presents a gala night with the big names of Meenzer Fassenacht: 'Büttenreden' (stand-up comedy speeches), singing groups, guard dance performances, sketches, and musical highlights. The Mainzer Hofsänger, MCC singers, and renowned soloists shape the multi-hour program, which traditionally opens with the registration of honored guests. The hall is filled with tuxedos and evening gowns, the audience in festive mood — the 1st Gala Sitting combines centuries-old Mainz Carnival tradition with modern political and socio-critical humor.

The Mainzer Carneval-Verein 1838 e.V. (MCV) is the cradle of modern Mainz Carnival. Since its founding in 1838, the MCV has significantly shaped the image of Meenzer Fassenacht, organizing the Rose Monday parade, hall events, youth work, and representing the organized form of Rhenish Carnival in its Mainz manifestation. The 1st Gala Sitting in the Electoral Palace traditionally opens the season of major MCV hall sittings each year and is one of the most sought-after tickets of the entire campaign.

The Electoral Palace, built from 1627 onwards as the residence of the Mainz Archbishops and Electors, offers a backdrop with its Academy Hall and Festival Hall that befits the solemn form of the Gala Sitting. Tuxedos, evening wear, gala robes, or festive evening gowns fill the hall, along with the uniforms of the Mainz Guards — Prinzengarde, Ranzengarde, Klepper-Garde, Füsilier-Garde — and the MCV board in the club's typical attire. The opening traditionally involves the entry of the committee and the registration of honored guests in the golden book.

The program combines the classic elements of Mainz hall carnival: political and socio-critical 'Büttenreden', in which Mainz personalities satirize current topics; performances by the Mainzer Hofsänger, a male choir with traditional and new carnival songs; guard dance performances with the 'Komitee-Marsch', the 'Schaukeltanz', and grand show acts; sketches and musical contributions by MCC and MCV artists; as well as guest appearances by renowned performers from the 'Bütt'. The committee, the club's dignitaries, sit elevated on the stage and handle moderation and 'Hopperdittchen' responses.

The 1st Gala Sitting thus represents the festive opening of the MCV's hall sitting series. Those who want to experience Mainz Carnival in its organized peak form, beyond the Rose Monday parade and street carnival, will find arguably the most elegant stage of Meenzer Fassenacht in the Electoral Palace. Tickets are highly coveted and usually sell out weeks before the sitting.

MCV 1st Gala Sitting 2026 — edition 2026

The 1st Gala Sitting of the Mainzer Carneval-Verein 1838 e.V. will take place in 2026 on Saturday, January 24, 2026, starting at 6:11 PM in the Electoral Palace Mainz. The MCV presents a gala night with the classic elements of Mainz hall carnival: political 'Büttenreden', performances by the Mainzer Hofsänger, the MCC, and the Mainz Guards, dance and show acts. The sitting is the festive opening of the MCV hall sitting season and a highlight of the early 2026 campaign phase.

The 1st Gala Sitting 2026 follows the proven dramaturgy of the MCV gala nights. After admission starting at 5 PM, the sitting begins punctually at 6:11 PM with the entry of the committee and the Mainz Narrhalla March. This is followed by the registration of honored guests in the golden book and the opening block with the MCV President and the committee. Over several hours, the sitting then presents a dense program of 'Büttenreden', singing performances, guard presentations, and music blocks, interspersed with short breaks during which the audience can refresh themselves at the standing tables. The finale traditionally consists of a joint 'Schunkellied' (swaying song) and the exit of the committee with the Mainz Narrhalla March.
