Slavs, Vikings, and Crafts on Pentecost in the reconstructed castle complex
The Medieval Pentecost Camp is one of the most visited events at the Groß Raden Archaeological Open-Air Museum. On Whit Sunday and Whit Monday, historical reenactment groups – including Schildwall, Fjoelwir, and Valhalla – transform the open-air grounds into a camp with around 75 participants demonstrating crafts, trade, and daily life of the Slavic and Viking age (9th–11th century).
Blacksmithing, bone carving, leatherworking, weaving looms, woodturning, and coin striking are demonstrated at numerous stations. Tastings of Slavic and Viking dishes based on historical recipes complement the program. Visitors can try their hand at tools, talk to the reenactors, and purchase small souvenirs.
From 1 PM daily, combat demonstrations and weapon presentations are on the program – staged fights with sword, axe, spear, and shield, choreographed based on historical sources. The fighting groups explain the techniques, equipment, and cultural context.
The central staging area is the reconstructed Slavic temple castle with its palisade ring, bridge, and temple building. It is part of one of Northern Germany's most important archaeological reconstructions and lends the event an extraordinary atmospheric depth.
Groß Raden is located in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, near the town of Sternberg and Lake Sternberg. The museum is part of the State Office for Culture and Monument Preservation MV and is open daily from April to October, 10 AM to 5:30 PM.
For Pentecost 2026 — Saturday, May 23rd, and Sunday, May 24th — the Groß Raden Open-Air Museum will once again transform its grounds into a large medieval camp. On both days, combat demonstrations and weapon presentations begin at 1 PM. Throughout the day, craft stalls will display blacksmithing, woodturning, leatherwork, and textile work. Slavic food and drinks will be available for tasting. Admission is at the regular museum price.
