About Rieweseckel-Kerwe Meckesheim

The Meckser Rieweseckel-Kerwe is one of the highlights of the calendar year in the municipality of Meckesheim and an occasion to celebrate together, feast, and strengthen the sense of community. For four days, the area around the town hall transforms into a lively festival ground in September or October 2026 with a ceremonial keg tapping, a parade on Sunday afternoon, amusement rides, a market, and a rich program by the Meckesheim clubs. The Kerwe owes its name to the traditional 'Rieweseckel' (turnip sack), a tongue-in-cheek nickname for the people of Meckesheim and a symbol of their rural roots in Kraichgau.

A Kerwe with Kraichgau Character

Meckesheim, idyllically located in the Rhein-Neckar district southeast of Heidelberg, cherishes a Kerwe tradition that has grown over generations. In autumn, the Rieweseckel-Kerwe opens its gates around the town hall and in the village center, uniting young and old for four intensive days of celebration. Here, you'll experience a true Kraichgau village festival—far from the hustle and bustle of large folk festivals, but with all the more warmth and neighborly flair.

Four Days of Celebration from Thursday to Sunday

Traditionally, the Kerwe begins on Thursday evening with the ceremonial keg tapping by the mayor. Friday is the festival evening with live music and a full festival tavern. Saturday is dedicated to the younger visitors with a party night and DJ music. The highlight is Sunday afternoon with the grand parade through Meckesheim—colorful floats, music bands, local clubs, and walking groups march through the main street and end at the festival grounds, where the program continues into the night.

The 'Rieweseckel' — Symbol and Nickname

The unusual name 'Rieweseckel' comes from the traditional nickname for the people of Meckesheim. In Kraichgau, turnips ('Riewe') were once transported to market in sacks—from this, the humorous epithet developed. The Kerwe association has adopted it and made it the festival's trademark. You'll find the Rieweseckel as a mascot on posters, beer mugs, and during the parade.

Amusement Rides, Market, and Culinary Delights

On the festival grounds, showmen with carousels, shooting galleries, candy stalls, and smaller amusement rides create a folk festival atmosphere. The market on Sunday brings traders from the entire region to Meckesheim. The festival tavern serves classics of Kraichgau cuisine: bratwurst, fries, Schäufele (pork shoulder), grilled chicken, and of course, Baden wines and regional beer. A cake buffet by the local clubs is also part of it.

The Sinsheim Experience Region Around It

Visitors to the Kerwe can combine their stay with a discovery tour through the Sinsheim Experience Region: the Sinsheim Technology Museum, the Lobenfeld Monastery in the immediate vicinity, or hikes in the Kleiner Odenwald forest are ideal day trips. Meckesheim itself impresses with its historic village center, the castle ruins, and a dense network of cycling and hiking trails.
