Main parade of Meckenheim Carnival on Sunday, February 15, 2026 at 2:11 PM
When the Bonn Rhineland goes wild during Carnival week 2026, it's not just Cologne, Bonn, Düsseldorf, and Mainz that are buzzing, but also the southern Bonn suburbs like Meckenheim. This small town (approx. 26,000 inhabitants) in the Rhein-Sieg district, located at the foot of the Siebengebirge hills, has cultivated a strong carnival tradition for generations — with carnival societies, galas, costume balls, and the central highlight: the Carnival Parade.
The Meckenheim Carnival Parade 2026 starts on Carnival Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 2:11 PM — the typical Rhenish start time, corresponding to the "11" in the date, a magical number in carnival. In the 2026 carnival calendar, this Sunday falls on the day before Rose Monday (Feb 16) and Shrove Tuesday (Feb 17) — the "Tolle Tage" (crazy days) of Rhenish Carnival conclude on Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2026.
The parade route in 2026 winds through Meckenheim's city center in the following order:
The route is approximately 2.5-3 km long and passes through the entire city center. If you want to see the whole parade, find a spot and let it pass by — walking along is not recommended, as the parade moves slower than the spectators on the sidelines.
The parade management and main organizer is the Festausschuss Meckenheimer Karneval (FMK), which brings together all carnival clubs, societies, schools, and associations in the city to participate. For decades, the FMK has coordinated the parade, ensuring order, safety, and diversity — from traditional folk bands and Funkenmariechen to self-built themed floats from smaller groups.
Rhenish Carnival is more than just a folk festival (Volksfest) — it's a lived regional identity. The "fifth season" lasts from November 11th (Carnival opening) until Ash Wednesday, with its peak during the "Tolle Tage" in February. In Meckenheim, local carnival societies are active year-round — with ladies' galas, male dance groups, prince and princess couples, and dance troupes. The carnival parade is the most public and socially integrating event of the season: families with children, teenagers in groups, adults in costumes — everyone stands at the roadside, shouting "Kamelle!"
The culture of the carnival parade is genuinely Rhenish and follows its own rules: Kamelle (sweets) are thrown from the floats into the crowd, Strüßjer (small bouquets) and occasionally Bützjer (cheek kisses) are distributed. "Mech-Mech Alaaf" — the Meckenheim carnival cheer — echoes along the route. Anyone attending a Rhenish carnival parade for the first time quickly learns: wear comfortable shoes, bring a bag for collecting Kamelle, and don't stand in the front row if you're with children — they have priority for collecting.
Meckenheim is located in the Rhein-Sieg district, south of Bonn, bordering the Vorgebirge region of the Eifel. It's a modern medium-sized town with an established old town center, characterized by apple and sweet cherry orchards on the outskirts (Meckenheim is part of the Vorgebirge, one of North Rhine-Westphalia's most important fruit-growing areas), and a vibrant club scene. Easily accessible via the A565 / A61 motorways; reachable by train via the S23 from Bonn Hauptbahnhof.
February 15, 2026, falls on Carnival Sunday in the 2026 carnival calendar — the family day of the "Tolle Tage". The parade of Meckenheim's carnival societies winds through the entire city center, attracting thousands of spectators from Meckenheim, Wachtberg, and the southern Bonn region.
The Festausschuss Meckenheimer Karneval coordinates the assembly and proceedings. All Meckenheim carnival clubs and societies participate; clubs from neighboring Wachtberg and Rheinbach districts may also join. The parade is colorful, loud, and the most important public carnival event in the city.
Current parade route and exact assembly/dispersal points available at meckenheim.de and via the FMK parade management.
Free admission — the carnival parade is a public street event. Sweets (Kamelle), Strüßjer, and small gifts are thrown from the parade into the crowd and are free of charge. Food and drinks from city center establishments and along the route are subject to charge.
By train: Take the S23 from Bonn Hauptbahnhof to Meckenheim station, then a 10-15 minute walk to the city center. By car: Take the A565 / A61 to the Meckenheim exit, then follow signs to the city center. During the carnival parade, the entire city center will be closed to traffic — Park & Ride facilities on the outskirts are recommended.
Sunday, February 15, 2026, 2:11 PM. Assembly in Josef-Kreuser-Str. Parade ends in Schützenstr. approx. 5:30 PM.
Free admission — the carnival parade is a public street event. Kamelle, Strüßjer, and sweets are thrown from the parade for free.
If you're coming with children, try to find a spot not too close to the beginning or end of the route — the parade might not be in full swing yet or already dispersing. The middle sections (Hauptstr., Merler Str.) offer the full carnival experience. Bring a water bottle and snacks — city center restaurants will be crowded. Carnival costumes are welcome but not mandatory.
