Marksmen's Tradition in the Duchy of Lauenburg

In the Duchy of Lauenburg, the southeastern district of Schleswig-Holstein between the Elbe and Lübeck, the marksmen's tradition is deeply rooted. Almost every municipality has its own marksmen's club, and the marksmen's festivals are the highlights of the village festival calendar. The Schützenverein Büchen und Umgegend e.V. is one of the most active in the region — and its annual marksmen's festival on the Schützenplatz at Fuchsweg is a must-attend event for members, former members, families, and guests from the entire community.

The Course of a North German Marksmen's Festival

The Büchen Schützenfest follows the classic schedule:

• Assembly of the marksmen with flag bearers at the Schützenplatz
• Parade through the town with the marksmen, affiliated clubs, marching bands, and musical ensembles — on the 2026 tour, including marching bands from the region (see marschband.de for dates)
• King's shooting — the competition for the title of king, the heart of every marksmen's festival
• Proclamation of the new marksmen's king and queen
• Social evenings with dancing and live music under the festival tent

Schützenplatz Fuchsweg

The Schützenplatz at Fuchsweg, with its shooting range and festival tent area, is the club's central event venue. On the same weekend as the Schützenfest — geographically directly adjacent — the flea market organized by Siegel-Konzept also takes place, drawing additional crowds to Büchen.

Büchen in the District of Duchy of Lauenburg

Büchen is a municipality with around 6,500 inhabitants located on the Hamburg–Berlin railway line and the Elbe-Lübeck Canal. The municipality is a railway hub for commuters to Hamburg and Schwarzenbek. Despite its modern location, a strong sense of community life has been preserved — fire brigades, marksmen's clubs, musical ensembles, and sports clubs shape the festival calendar.
