The most traditional session of the Mainzer Carneval Club at its founding place
The Mainzer Carneval Club 1899 e.V. (MCC) was founded on November 11, 1899, in Mainz's old town – according to tradition, in a pub in Birnbaumgasse, a small side street in the quarter south of the cathedral. This founding history is deeply anchored in the MCC's self-image and gives one of the club's internal sessions its name: the Birnbaum-Sitzung. For over a century, this session has developed into one of the most traditional events of the Meenzer Fassenacht (Mainz Carnival).
The Birnbaum-Sitzung takes place in the academy or festival hall of the Kurfürstliches Schloss, the baroque residence of the former Mainz Archbishops and Electors. The magnificent ambiance, the exclusive atmosphere of a hall that is not excessively large, and the strong club-internal character shaped by MCC members and regular audience members define the Birnbaum-Sitzung. Those who get a ticket become part of a session that consciously targets connoisseurs of Mainz Carnival rather than outsiders.
The program combines the classic elements of the Mainz hall session in a particularly dense form. MCC's own singers open the proceedings with classics like 'Im Mer im Pfälzischen Wein' and club-own compositions. This is followed by political and socio-critical Büttenreden, which in the MCC style are usually rather direct and linguistically uncompromising, performances by the MCC Garde (guards) with show dances and the Komitee-Marsch, sketches, and musical contributions. The MCC Komitee, in its typical club-loyal costume, moderates with the characteristic blend of pathos and self-irony that distinguishes the MCC.
The Birnbaum-Sitzung thus stands not only for a historical date but for a conscious cultivation of Mainz Carnival tradition in its club-internal form. It is less a shop window to the outside than a lived identity inwards – and precisely for this reason, for connoisseurs of the Meenzer Fassenacht, it is one of the most sought-after sessions of the campaign.
The program for the Birnbaum-Sitzung 2026 follows the proven MCC hall session dramaturgy. After admission, the session begins with the entry of the MCC Komitee and an opening block by the MCC singer groups. This is followed by a dense sequence of political Büttenreden in the characteristic direct MCC style, Garde show dances, sketches, and musical contributions. Intermissions allow for encounters in the foyer. The highlight is usually a grand final block with all MCC Garde and singers, followed by the exit of the Komitee with the Mainz Narrhalla-Marsch. Exact times and stage order will be announced with the MCC's program publication in January.
