Berlin's Modern Christmas Funfair

While Berlin has been known for years for its established Advent markets at Gendarmenmarkt, Alexanderplatz, and Charlottenburg Palace, a full-fledged Christmas Rummel (fairground) was long missing: an open festival ground with large rides, not tied to a historic city center square, but functioning as a standalone event space. With the Berliner Wintertraum in Niederschöneweide, a new format has been established since 2023 that fills this gap — and it's booming: over 60 attractions, several hectares of land, an atmosphere between a Christmas market and a late-summer Volksfest.

The Highlights: Free-Fall Tower and Ferris Wheel

The hallmarks are two spectacular adrenaline rides:

• The "Mission Impossible" Free-Fall Tower towers 85 meters over Schnellerstraße — one of the tallest transportable rides in Europe. Those sitting at the top have a panoramic view over Treptow-Köpenick all the way to Mitte; those who dare the drop experience approx. 4 seconds of free fall.
• The 35-meter "Circle of Life" Ferris Wheel offers the calmer, romantic option — ideal for couples and families, with a lit mulled wine glass on their laps.

In addition, there's the "Crazy Mine" roller coaster, the "Delirium" giant swing, a classic haunted house ("Haunted Castle"), Evolution & Break Dance for adrenaline junkies, and numerous family-friendly carousels, dart-throwing stalls, and prize games.

Culinary Delights with a Twist: The Entenbraterei

Besides the classic Christmas market stalls with mulled wine, roasted almonds, bratwurst, and crêpes, the Berliner Wintertraum has a culinary hallmark: the Entenbraterei, a pop-up restaurant serving roast duck and goose legs with red cabbage and dumplings — classic German holiday cuisine, usually enjoyed in the living room, here right in the middle of the fair. Accompanied by mulled wine variations, egg punch, apple punch, and winter specialties.

Family Friendliness as a Program Point

The organizer explicitly focuses on family offerings: Family Days with half-price rides, a St. Nicholas Day with small gifts, a special day for children with disabilities, and the entire concept is designed for intergenerational appeal. This distinguishes the Wintertraum from many other Berlin events that primarily target a young adult audience.

Niederschöneweide as a Location

The choice of Schnellerstraße 145 in the Niederschöneweide district is part of the program logic. The area is located in the Treptow-Köpenick district, on the edge of the established city center — easily accessible by S-Bahn, but off the tourist routes. This makes the format a typical Outer Berlin event: less tourist crowds than at Gendarmenmarkt, but more Berlin families from the eastern part of the city, who find their own winter highlight here.
