One of Lower Saxony's largest Christmas markets with festively illuminated ships in the Ratsdelft and a large Christmas pyramid
While many German Christmas markets focus on classic wooden huts and Alpine gingerbread, the Engelkemarkt Emden has developed a different identity: it uses the city's maritime location on the Ratsdelft as a defining visual and atmospheric element. During the market, festively illuminated traditional ships are anchored in the harbor basin, fairy lights span the water's surface, and the market stalls along the harbor promenade are reflected in the water. This combination is unique in Germany and attracts thousands of visitors annually.
The market is spread across several central squares and streets: the Ratsdelft as the maritime center, the Stadtgarten as the main location for stalls, the Hafentor with additional offerings, the Brückstraße with smaller stalls, and the Neuer Markt with further sales booths. A large Christmas pyramid forms the visual focal point and is featured in many of the city's promotional materials.
Saint Nicholas receives children and adults on the market grounds daily from 5 PM from December 1 to 24. Various clubs, schools, and choirs perform on a small stage in the Stadtgarten or as part of special events. The offerings at the market stalls range from mulled wine, bratwurst, and potato pancakes to gingerbread and sweets, as well as handicrafts, Christmas decorations, furs, and East Frisian specialties like beans, Smut (a type of plum compote), or tea.
The market is open for a total of 39 days, making it one of the longest-running Christmas markets in Northern Germany. It is closed only on Christmas Eve, and the first and second days of Christmas (December 24-26). Admission is free. Individual stalls are typically open between 11 AM and 9 PM, sometimes with shorter hours at the beginning of the week.
The 2026 Engelkemarkt offers the usual extensive range of gastronomic stalls, handicrafts, Christmas decorations, and maritime atmosphere. The festively illuminated ships in the Ratsdelft are the visual highlight of the market and a popular photo opportunity. The large Christmas pyramid forms the central meeting point and is visible throughout the city center.
Detailed opening hours for individual stalls, the program for special events, and the dates for St. Nicholas's visits will be announced via the website engelkemarkt.info.
The 2026 program follows the market's established structure:
Special programs (choirs, brass bands, children's activities) will be communicated in advance via the official website engelkemarkt.info.
