Film series in the tower of St. Mary's Church
The Marienkino is one of the most original cultural series in the Hanseatic city of Wismar in the Nordwestmecklenburg district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Screenings are held in the tower of St. Mary's Church – a mighty brick building that shapes the cityscape. The historic space lends each film screening an atmosphere that no ordinary cinema can offer.
The series follows a fixed rhythm: On the last Wednesday of each month, the Hanseatic city of Wismar invites you to a screening, usually starting at 7:00 PM, with admission from 6:30 PM. This creates a small, regular film series for cinephiles and curious visitors throughout the year.
The program focuses on film classics, regional productions, and works related to the city and region – including literary adaptations and films partly shot in Wismar. Thus, the Marienkino combines film culture with the city's history and architectural heritage.
Because seating is limited in the church tower, early booking is recommended. The Marienkino is listed in the Hanseatic city's event calendar as a recurring highlight and a good reason to get to know the UNESCO World Heritage site of Wismar from an unusual perspective.
The Marienkino 2026 takes place as a monthly film series in the tower of St. Mary's Church – on the last Wednesday of each month, usually starting at 7:00 PM.
On Wednesday, May 27, 2026, Marienkino will screen the literary adaptation 'Sansibar oder der letzte Grund' by Bernhard Wicki from 1987, based on the novel of the same name by Alfred Andersch, at 7:00 PM (admission from 6:30 PM).
Throughout 2026, further screenings will follow on the last Wednesday of each month. As seating is limited, early booking is recommended.
The Hanseatic city of Wismar will announce the film titles for the further screenings in the event calendar.
Wismar is located on the railway line to Schwerin and Rostock; St. Mary's Church is within walking distance of the train station. By car, take the A20 (exit Wismar).
