The Eifelverein in Neuerburg

Founded in 1888, the Eifelverein is one of Germany's largest hiking associations with over 22,000 members. It maintains the Eifel's hiking trail network — over 8,000 kilometers of marked trails — protects the landscape, and is committed to preserving local heritage. The Neuerburg local chapter is one of the association's approximately 140 local groups and organizes a diverse annual program with hikes, lectures, and community activities.

Maiwanderung as the Season Opener

The Maiwanderung on May 1st traditionally marks the start of the hiking year — spring has arrived, the forests are budding, the meadows are blooming, and the weather is mild enough for a longer tour. In Neuerburg, the route, depending on the year, leads through various landscapes: along the Enz river, through beech and oak forests, over open heights with views of the castle and town, to rest stops with Eifel panoramas.

Route Length and Difficulty

The tour is designed as a family-friendly hike, usually between 8 and 15 kilometers long, with moderate elevation changes. Sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. The hiking guides choose the route so that even inexperienced hikers can keep up — breaks with rest and picnics are planned.

Social Experience

Conversations arise during the walk, acquaintances deepen, and new ones are made. The Maiwanderung is also a social event that strengthens the local community. The hike often ends with a stop at a restaurant, where the day concludes with a shared lunch or coffee.
