Traditional spring hike of the Eifelverein through forests and meadows on May 1st
The Maiwanderung Neuerburg of the Eifelverein, Neuerburg local chapter, is a firm tradition on May 1st. On Wednesday, May 1st, 2026, the association invites you to a spring hike through the forests, meadows, and along the Enz river around Neuerburg. The hike is open to members and guests, guided by experienced hiking leaders.
The Maiwanderung is more than a walk — it is a communal spring ritual that celebrates nature, the Eifel landscape, and social bonds in the community of Neuerburg.
Founded in 1888, the Eifelverein is one of Germany's largest hiking associations with over 22,000 members. It maintains the Eifel's hiking trail network — over 8,000 kilometers of marked trails — protects the landscape, and is committed to preserving local heritage. The Neuerburg local chapter is one of the association's approximately 140 local groups and organizes a diverse annual program with hikes, lectures, and community activities.
The Maiwanderung on May 1st traditionally marks the start of the hiking year — spring has arrived, the forests are budding, the meadows are blooming, and the weather is mild enough for a longer tour. In Neuerburg, the route, depending on the year, leads through various landscapes: along the Enz river, through beech and oak forests, over open heights with views of the castle and town, to rest stops with Eifel panoramas.
The tour is designed as a family-friendly hike, usually between 8 and 15 kilometers long, with moderate elevation changes. Sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. The hiking guides choose the route so that even inexperienced hikers can keep up — breaks with rest and picnics are planned.
Conversations arise during the walk, acquaintances deepen, and new ones are made. The Maiwanderung is also a social event that strengthens the local community. The hike often ends with a stop at a restaurant, where the day concludes with a shared lunch or coffee.
Those who participate in the Maiwanderung get to know the Eifel in a special way — as a lived homeland, as a protected natural landscape, and as a place of shared experience. The Südeifel Nature Park and the Nordeifel Nature Park surround the region and offer countless route variations.
The 2026 Maiwanderung of the Eifelverein, Neuerburg local chapter, takes place on May 1st and opens the spring hiking season. The tour leads through the forests, meadows, and along the Enz river around Neuerburg, guided by experienced hiking leaders. A family-friendly, sociable hike that concludes with a stop at a restaurant. Open to members and guests, no association membership required.
The Neuerburg Eifelverein maintains the region's hiking trail network and organizes a varied annual program. The Maiwanderung is the season opener and traditionally very well attended. The exact route will be determined shortly before the date, depending on the weather and trail conditions.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in April. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
