About Mainz WinterZeit

From November 26th to December 30th, 2026, the Mainzer WinterZeit complements the historic Christmas market at the Cathedral with four additional themed markets in the city center: at Schillerplatz, in Hopfengarten, at the station forecourt, and in the courtyard of the palace. Organized by mainzplus Citymarketing, each market presents its own concept — from urban hut atmosphere to wine and gourmet focus, and winter drink variations. A new lighting concept and atmospherically staged locations make the markets an experience well beyond Christmas. While the historic market at the Cathedral closes on December 23rd, the WinterZeit markets run until December 30th, filling the days between the holidays with Advent atmosphere.

The Mainzer WinterZeit is the younger sister of the traditional Christmas market in front of the Cathedral. Developed by mainzplus Citymarketing as a complementary concept, it expands the Christmas city of Mainz with four themed markets in the city center — each with its own character and a crucial extension: The WinterZeit markets remain open until December 30th, significantly longer than the historic main market.

The four locations each have their own character:

The Schillerplatz market utilizes the central square with its Carnival Fountain and offers an urban hut program with classic mulled wine stands, upscale street food options, an ice carousel, and a long bar atmosphere. Schillerplatz is particularly busy in the evenings — young people from Mainz meet here for a mulled wine after work.

The Hopfengarten, a green inner-city oasis near the university, offers a quieter atmosphere with wine served by Mainz and Rheinhessen vintners, regional specialties, and lounge areas. Here, Mainz's wine DNA is particularly evident.

The Bahnhofsvorplatz (station forecourt) market is the youngest of the four locations and is specifically aimed at travelers and commuters — a compact offering of mulled wine, snacks, and small gifts, ideal for a quick stop.

The Schloss-Innenhof (courtyard of the Electoral Palace Mainz) is the most spectacular new venue: the baroque courtyard transforms into a festively illuminated market with upscale culinary offerings, curated gift stalls, and a particularly elaborate light show. With a concept first introduced in 2025 and expanded in 2026, this location has quickly achieved cult status.

The new lighting concept visually connects all four markets with the city center's main thoroughfares and the historic Cathedral market, creating a continuous Christmas city — a deliberate city marketing strategy that stages Mainz as a cohesive Advent experience from the station to the Cathedral.

The extended opening until December 30th is the most important innovation of the WinterZeit. This allows Mainz to fill the touristically important days between Christmas and New Year's Eve with Advent atmosphere, which is particularly attractive for day-trippers from the Rhine-Main region.

Mainz WinterZeit — edition 2026

The Mainzer WinterZeit Christmas markets run from November 26th to December 30th, 2026, at four locations in the city center: Schillerplatz (urban hut atmosphere), Hopfengarten (wine bar), Bahnhofsvorplatz (compact for travelers), Schloss-Innenhof (upscale culinary and light show). They complement the historic market at the Cathedral and remain open until December 30th. A new lighting concept connects all locations into a Christmas city.

The 2026 program follows the proven concept of mainzplus Citymarketing for the Christmas city. The four locations open simultaneously with the historic market on November 26th and run until December 30th — one week longer than the main market at the Cathedral. Daily opening hours vary by location: Schillerplatz and Hopfengarten have long evening openings, while Bahnhof and Schloss operate during classic market hours. Special events on Advent Sundays, a visit from St. Nicholas on December 6th, and live music on select evenings complement the daily market activities.
