Rainbow parade and pride festival in the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein
Christopher Street Day Kiel is the largest queer festival in northern Schleswig-Holstein. In the independent city of Kiel — the state capital on the western shore of the Kiel Fjord — a colorful, loud rainbow parade marches through the city center every year. The demonstration is the starting point and heart of a day full of political speeches, cultural performances, and community celebration.
CSD Kiel positions itself not as a pure street festival, but as a demonstration. The motto for the 2026 edition is "Safe Harbors for All" — a programmatic statement that embraces Kiel's maritime image while simultaneously demanding a safe space for queer people. The organizer describes CSD on its website as "loud, visible, and uncomfortable".
The parade leads through Kiel's city center and along the fjord. Thousands of participants march with floats, banners, and music through the streets — from political initiatives and queer associations to companies and families. The procession is accompanied by stage programs with live music, drag shows, and speeches.
Around the parade day, CSD Kiel e.V. organizes a whole week of pre-events: workshops, discussion rounds, readings, and parties. Traditionally, the kick-off includes a Drag Walk and the Rainbow Picnic in May. Program items are gradually published on the website in spring.
As a university and naval base, Kiel has a long tradition of queer visibility. CSD brings together the entire spectrum of the community — from LSBTIQ* counseling centers and student initiatives to the older generation — and makes the city center a visible pride space every July.
The parade is the centerpiece: thousands of participants, decorated floats, banners, music. Afterwards, the demonstrators gather on the stages in the city center, where speeches, live concerts, and drag shows continue the day. In the evening, parties take place in several locations in the city.
According to the organizer, the detailed 2026 event calendar is "currently being built" and will be published gradually on csd-kiel.de. Performing acts and speakers will be announced in the weeks leading up to the event.
By train to Kiel Hauptbahnhof, then walk to the city center. By car via the A210 and A215. Parking in city center parking garages (Sophienhof, Holsten-Galerie) — limited spaces, early arrival recommended.
The parade is open to everyone. Registration for floats, groups, and banners via the CSD Kiel e.V. website in advance.
