Two weeks of Volksfest and spring fair on the Mainz Rhine promenade with a Ferris wheel, rides, and two grand fireworks displays
The Mainzer Rheinfrühling was launched in 2017 and has quickly established itself as a fixture in Mainz's event calendar. While the traditional Mainzer Johannisfest in June and the wine festival in August are the major summer highlights on the Rhine, the Rheinfrühling ushers in the open-air season shortly after Easter. For two weeks, the Volksfest brings together thousands of visitors from Mainz and the region at one of the state capital's most attractive inner-city locations.
Around forty showmen present their rides, carousels, game stalls, prize stalls, and snack stands on the festival grounds between Kaisertor and Kurfürstenbrunnen. The landmark is the large Ferris wheel, „Grand Soleil", which offers panoramic views of the Rhine, the Cathedral, and the city center all the way to Wiesbaden on clear days. Families will find a dedicated zone with carousels and rides for toddlers; in the evenings, the area transforms into a relaxed entertainment mile for young adults.
Characteristic of the Rheinfrühling are the two grand fireworks displays that frame the festival events: one for the opening on the first Saturday evening, the other for the closing on the last weekend. Against the backdrop of the Cathedral and the Rhine promenade, reflected in the water, they are among the largest and most beautiful pyrotechnic shows in Mainz's annual calendar. Thousands of spectators crowd both sides of the Rhine – the show is also clearly visible from the Maaraue on the Hessian side.
The gastronomic offerings range from classic fairground food – bratwurst, potato pancakes, fries, sweets – to wine stands where vintners from Rheinhessen and the Palatinate serve their wines. Mainzer Bier, wines from the surrounding area, and non-alcoholic specialties complement the offerings. The Rheinfrühling thus fits seamlessly into the wine and event tradition of the state capital.
Highlights in 2026 include the two grand fireworks displays on March 28 (opening) and April 11 (finale), which will be set off against the backdrop of Mainz Cathedral and the Rhine promenade. The "Grand Soleil" Ferris wheel will offer scenic rides over the city center for the entire two weeks. The detailed program calendar with family days, gastronomic specials, and supplementary events will be published by the organizer in early March 2026.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
