Traditional village festival with Boßel tournament on June 6, 2026 in Hörden — living East Frisian-North German throwing culture in the southern Harz
Hörden is a district of the municipality of Bad Grund in the Harz mountains and belongs to the Samtgemeinde Hattorf am Harz. With around 800 inhabitants, the village maintains a lively club and village life, at the heart of which is the annual Dorffest with Boßel tournament. The Hörden multi-purpose hall and its surroundings form the permanent setting for the event.
Boßeln is a traditional North German throwing game, primarily popular in East Frisia, Oldenburg, and parts of Lower Saxony. In classic street Boßeln, wooden or rubber balls are thrown along country roads or streets, with the aim of covering a certain distance in as few throws as possible. Teams compete against each other, and the social aspect with catering and accompaniment is at least as important as the sporting competition. In Northern Germany, Boßeln is one of the classic folk sports, and the sport has also established itself in parts of the Harz.
The Hörden village festival combines the Boßel tournament with a classic village festival program. While the Boßel teams are out on the competition course in the morning and afternoon, catering, stalls, and musical contributions are already taking place at the multi-purpose hall. In the afternoon, everyone comes together again — the winning and other teams are welcomed and honored, and the social part begins with live music, dancing, catering, and festival activities.
The Hörden village community and several local clubs — sports club, fire department, women's club, parish — are involved in the program. This collaborative organization makes the festival an expression of village togetherness and gives it its authentic character.
Bratwurst, steaks, fries, salads, cakes, ice cream, beer, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic drinks cater to the guests. The festival tent or the multi-purpose hall offer shelter in changeable weather, and an outdoor area with tables, benches, and play equipment invites visitors to linger.
The 2026 edition continues the proven format. Boßel teams compete on the course in the morning and afternoon, while the village festival takes place at the multi-purpose hall. In the afternoon and evening, everyone comes together to experience the award ceremony and the joint celebration.
