City's largest private flea market: on 16 Saturdays a year between Kaisertor and Theodor-Heuss-Brücke
The Mainzer Krempelmarkt is one of the most charming flea markets in the Rhine-Main region. Unlike commercial flea markets, where traders often dominate with imported goods, here only private individuals are allowed as vendors. This shapes the entire assortment: you'll find genuine household clear-outs, old books from family libraries, vinyl records from the 1960s to the 1990s, vintage clothing, dishes, toys, tools, furniture, and all sorts of curiosities that make their way from the attic to the Rhine promenade's offerings.
The market takes place on sixteen selected Saturdays per season – from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The dates for 2026 are spread throughout the warm season: March 14, April 18 and 25, May 2 and 9, June 6 and 27, July 11 and 25, August 8 and 22, September 5 and 19, October 10 and 24, November 7. This distribution creates dates for spring cleaning, peak summer thrifting, and autumn decluttering before winter.
The sales area stretches along the Mainz Rhine promenade between Kaisertor and Theodor-Heuss-Brücke. This location is an attraction in itself: with views of the Rhine, the opposite Hesse region, and the passing ship traffic panorama, it's not only good for browsing but also for a relaxed stroll. In between, beer gardens and cafés along the Rhine invite you to take a break, and the Mainz city center is just a few steps away.
Anyone who wants to sell themselves can register with the organizer. A stall space costs 25 Euros for the usual area – a moderate fee open to private sellers, from students to retirees. Admission is free for visitors. Those seriously looking for beautiful items should come early: the best coffee cups, vinyl records, and design pieces are often gone before 9 a.m., while prices become noticeably negotiable after 1 p.m.
What sets the Mainzer Krempelmarkt apart from ordinary flea markets is the direct human interaction: behind every table is a person with a story – a move, a household clearance after a death, tidying up before retirement, a student's decluttering project. Those who bring time will hear stories and take home not just items, but also memories.
Those who wish to participate as sellers should register early – popular dates in spring and summer are often booked weeks in advance. For buyers, an early market visit is recommended to not miss the best items; prices are usually negotiable in the afternoon. The full list of dates for 2026 can be viewed on the City of Mainz website.
