Symbolic start of the Mainz Carnival campaign 2026 with 1,200 guards and 450 musicians from Ernst-Ludwig-Platz to the Cathedral
The Mainz Carnival is one of Germany's most significant carnival traditions and has been recognized as intangible UNESCO cultural heritage since 2014. It differs from its Rhineland counterparts in Cologne and Düsseldorf through its unique literary-political tradition: the famous Mainz 'Bütt' speeches, the ZDF television broadcast 'Mainz bleibt Mainz' (Mainz remains Mainz), and a highly developed club system with over 55 guards and associations shape its character.
The Neujahrsumzug is the official, symbolic start of the actual carnival campaign, which, although it began on November 11th, only gains momentum in terms of events and street activity with the new year. Precisely at 11:11 AM – the jesters' hour – the parade sets off from Ernst-Ludwig-Platz.
The parade proceeds via Große Bleiche, past Münsterplatz, across Schillerplatz, to Domplatz, where the traditional open-air concert takes place in front of Mainz Cathedral. This route traverses the historic old town, symbolically aligning the carnival festivities with the city's main cultural and religious axis.
The 2026 edition will feature 1,200 guards and 450 musicians. The Mainz Guards wear historically inspired uniforms, often referencing military models from the 18th and 19th centuries; the music corps provide the sonic backdrop with marches and carnival pieces. The 2026 campaign motto – 'Die Hofsänger im Gold'nen Mainz – seit 100 Jahr'n die Nummer 1' – honors the 100th anniversary of the Mainzer Hofsänger, one of Mainz's most traditional carnival clubs.
The event is organized by the Mainz Carnival Club (MCV) in collaboration with the Mainz Guards. During the parade, large parts of the city center are closed to car traffic; arriving by public transport is strongly recommended.
