About Mainz lebt — Karmeliterplatz

Mainz lebt auf seinen Plätzen is one of the state capital's most charming summer initiatives: For six weeks, the City of Mainz transforms several central squares into open stages for music, culture, science, and children's programs. The Karmeliterplatz edition complements the offerings at the Marktplatz and brings the festival to the medieval quarter of Mainz's Old Town. From Tuesday to Thursday, in the early evening hours for families and late evening for live music, the program consciously offers low-threshold encounters. Free admission, regional actors, and an atmosphere that shapes the Mainz summer lifestyle — Mainz lebt auf seinen Plätzen is a highlight in the city's event calendar.

The summer series Mainz lebt auf seinen Plätzen is an initiative by the City of Mainz, which uses several central squares in the Old Town for a free event program over six summer weeks. With around 36 event dates annually, it is one of the densest municipal cultural series of the Mainz summer and a conscious commitment to revitalizing public space beyond consumer offerings. The Karmeliterplatz edition complements the main program at the Marktplatz and adds its own atmospheric note: it moves the events into the medieval quarter around the Karmeliterkirche, one of the oldest and most atmospheric corners of Mainz's Old Town.

The Karmeliterplatz, framed by the Gothic Karmeliterkirche and historic half-timbered houses, offers a different character than the open expanse of the Marktplatz: narrower, more intimate, acoustically richer. Here, the children's program and concerts come into their own in an almost chamber music-like form. The city sets up a small stage, along with standing tables, benches, and a catering area with drinks and small snacks. The atmosphere invites lingering without creating an obligation to consume — even those who just listen to a sing-along session or a concert and then move on are welcome.

The program is spread across Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the early evening hours. The first slot from 4 p.m. is usually filled with a children's program: children's theater, song programs, hands-on activities, or small circus performances, aimed at families and children aged four and up. From 9 p.m., the second slot begins with live music: acoustic sets, jazz trios, singer-songwriters, world music ensembles, or classical chamber music ensembles featuring artists from Mainz. Occasionally, scientific formats are offered — short lectures, science slams, or discussion evenings — which add an intellectual dimension to the event profile.

Mainz lebt auf seinen Plätzen — Karmeliterplatz is aimed at both residents of Mainz and visitors who want to experience the Mainz summer in its most relaxed form. With its free offerings, its roots in the regional cultural and scientific scene, and its connection to one of the most beautiful squares in the Old Town, the series embodies a concept that understands public space as the city's cultural stage.

Mainz lebt — Karmeliterplatz — edition 2026

The Karmeliterplatz edition of Mainz lebt auf seinen Plätzen 2026 spans six summer weeks from July to September 2026. Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, the City of Mainz activates Karmeliterplatz with a free program featuring children's activities from 4 p.m. and live music from 9 p.m. A total of around 18 dates at Karmeliterplatz, complemented by the parallel main program at Marktplatz. Free admission, drinks and snacks available on site.

The 2026 program will be published by the City of Mainz in early summer and follows the proven structure of previous years. Each event day is divided into two slots: From 4 p.m., the children's program is aimed at families — children's theater, song formats, hands-on activities, or circus performances. From 9 p.m., live music follows with artists from Mainz and the region from the genres of jazz, singer-songwriter, world music, acoustic pop, or classical. Scientific formats are occasionally included (science slam, short lecture). A break between slots allows for snacks or a stroll through the Old Town. A detailed list of all dates, artists, and programs will be published on mainz.de in mid-June.
