About Mainau Midsommar

On June 20 and 21, 2026, the courtyard of Mainau Castle on the Lake Constance flower island will transform into a Swedish festival scene. From 10 AM to 5 PM, Mainau GmbH will host its traditional Midsommarfest with dancing around the Midsommar pole, flower crown weaving, Swedish music, traditional cuisine, and a family program. The island of Mainau has belonged to the originally Swedish Count Bernadotte family since 1853 — Midsommar is the family's declaration of allegiance to their Scandinavian heritage.

Midsommar on Mainau

The Island of Mainau in Lake Constance — the famous flower island — has been owned by the Count Bernadotte family, a Swedish noble family (same name as the Swedish royal house), since 1853. The family actively maintains its Scandinavian tradition: Every year in mid-June, the Swedish Midsommarfest — the celebration of the summer solstice, one of the three major holidays in the Swedish folk calendar alongside Christmas and Lucia — is celebrated in the courtyard of Mainau Castle. The 2026 edition will take place on Saturday, June 20, and Sunday, June 21, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Program — Midsummer Celebration in Swedish Style

The festival program strictly follows Swedish tradition: At its center is the Midsommar pole (Swedish: midsommarstång), a maypole decorated with birch branches, wildflowers, and ribbons, around which people dance. Swedish folk songs accompany the dances — the well-known Små grodorna (Little Frogs), folk dances in traditional costumes. Flower crown weaving — a central Midsommar symbol — takes place as a hands-on activity for children and adults. A children's play area under an awning complements the offerings.

Swedish Gastronomy

Culinary delights include classic Swedish specialties — pickled herring (sill) on crispbread, new potatoes with dill, Swedish meatballs (köttbullar), salmon in various preparations, strawberry cake with whipped cream (the season of the Swedish summer strawberry). Food is served in the island's restaurants and at specially erected stands in the castle courtyard.

Mainau and Lake Constance

The Island of Mainau is located in Lake Constance near Konstanz, about 4.5 km north of Konstanz's old town, and is accessible from the mainland via the Mainau Bridge. It belongs to the city and district of Konstanz in the state of Baden-Württemberg. With around 1.2 million visitors annually, it is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Southern Germany. The 18th-century castle with its courtyard forms the historic stage for the Midsommarfest; surrounding it are the 45 hectares of the famous park with its rhododendron fields, Italian rose garden, butterfly house, and summer flower splendor.

Mainau Midsommar — edition 2026

The Mainau Midsommarfest 2026 takes place on June 20 and 21, 2026, from 10 AM to 5 PM in the castle courtyard of Mainau Island. Swedish Midsummer Festival with dancing around the decorated Midsommar pole, flower crown weaving as a hands-on activity, Swedish folk songs and dances, Swedish gastronomy (herring, Köttbullar, strawberry cake). Children's play area. Organizer: Mainau GmbH (Bernadotte family). Included in the regular Mainau admission fee.

Program 2026 — Swedish Family Festival

Mainau GmbH is organizing the Midsommarfest 2026 in its established format: two days of courtyard events with the Midsommar pole as the central symbol. The pole is decorated in the morning with birch branches, wildflowers, and ribbons; families and guests dance around it in Swedish folk dances — a tradition that has been celebrated in Sweden for centuries on the longest day of the year.

Activities are spread throughout the day: flower crown weaving at hands-on stations for children and adults (with materials provided), Swedish folk songs with accompanying music, performances by Swedish dance groups in traditional costume, demonstrations for children. The children's play area under an awning provides a protected space for the youngest.
