One of the largest folk festivals in the Vorderhunsrück region with rides, stalls, and family day
The Maimarkt Simmern is one of the largest folk festivals (Volksfeste) in the Vorderhunsrück region and transforms the historic town center of the Hunsrück district town into a fairground with numerous rides, stalls, and marquees from May 14th to 18th, 2026. The festival grounds extend around Simmern Castle and across Schlossplatz and Brühlplatz.
A Ferris wheel, Breakdance, dodgems, and a wide range of other rides attract thousands of visitors from the Hunsrück, the Rhine-Moselle region, and the nearby Rheingau. The family day on Whit Monday marks the conclusion of a festival that firmly establishes the five market days from Thursday to Monday in the region's spring calendar.
The Maimarkt Simmern is the traditional spring folk festival (Volksfest) of the Hunsrück district town of Simmern and is one of the largest events of its kind in the western Rhein-Hunsrück district. Its roots go back centuries; originally, the Maimarkt was an important cattle and general market, which gradually evolved into a classic folk festival.
The festival grounds encompass several central areas of Simmern's old town: the area around Simmern Castle (now home to the Hunsrück Museum), Schlossplatz, and Brühlplatz. This generous layout allows for a multitude of rides, stalls, and marquees – an important prerequisite for the Maimarkt to maintain its impressive scale.
Classic and modern attractions are represented among the rides: the obligatory Ferris wheel with views of the Hunsrück, the Breakdance for adrenaline lovers, the dodgems for generations of young people, plus carousels for the youngest visitors, a haunted house, shooting galleries, and throwing stalls. The mix of tradition and new large rides makes the Maimarkt attractive to visitors of all ages.
The marquees and gastronomic stalls offer Hunsrück specialties, bratwurst, fries, crêpes, potato pancakes, sweets, and drinks – from draft beer and non-alcoholic beverages to Middle Rhine and Moselle wines. The opening hours are generous: Thursday 2 PM to 10 PM, Friday 1 PM to 1 AM, Saturday 12 PM to 1 AM, Sunday 11 AM to 10 PM, and Monday (Family Day) 12 PM to 9 PM.
The Family Day on Whit Monday, May 18th, 2026, marks the traditional conclusion of the Maimarkt. On this day, reduced prices apply to the rides, making it particularly attractive for families. The Pentecost date ensures good weather prospects and gives families from the entire region the opportunity to visit the Hunsrück during the extended weekend.
From Thursday, May 14th, to Whit Monday, May 18th, 2026, the Maimarkt Simmern once again invites you to the grand spring folk festival (Volksfest) of the Hunsrück district town. Around Simmern Castle, on Schlossplatz and Brühlplatz, a Ferris wheel, Breakdance, dodgems, and numerous other rides will be set up. Marquees with gastronomic offerings, a stage program, and the traditional family day on Whit Monday with reduced prices complete the festival.
The 2026 edition of the Maimarkt continues the centuries-old tradition of Simmern's spring folk festival (Volksfest). For five days around the extended Pentecost weekend, the old town of the Hunsrück district town transforms into a large fairground with major rides, stalls, and gastronomic offerings.
The generous opening hours — until late into the night on Friday and Saturday — and the traditional family day on Whit Monday offer different atmospheres for different visitor groups. Several thousand visitors from the Hunsrück and surrounding regions are expected.
