Traditional Spring Market with Barrel Tapping, Shuttle Bus, and Over 50 Stalls on the Third Sunday in May
When the Neuenbürg market square is closed to traffic on the third Sunday in May and transforms into a market from 11 AM to 6 PM, it's Maimarkt. In 2026, Maimarkt will take place on Sunday, May 17. Maimarkt is the town's annual spring event and is traditionally considered one of the most beautiful markets in the region — the Pforzheimer Zeitung literally headlined in 2024, "The most beautiful Maimarkt in a long time?"
Over 50 sales stands will be spread throughout the city center — fashion, household goods, jewelry, leather goods, handicrafts, plants, honey, spices, baked goods, cheese, sausage, and wine. Local producers and dealers from the Enzkreis district will be present, as well as showman stalls with sweets and crêpes. A Sunday with extended shopping hours complements the market offerings — Neuenbürg's shops will open their doors concurrently.
Classically, the market opens at 11 AM with the barrel tapping by Mayor Fabian Bader — a Swabian-Southwestern German tradition where the first beer is ceremonially tapped. The Neuenbürg town band will accompany this with a small opening concert. Afterward, the festival continues throughout the day.
Several program items will take place throughout the day:
Local clubs — the Neuenbürg fire department, the sports club, the heritage society — will offer classic market food: bratwurst, fries, steak sandwiches, cake, crêpes. Several food trucks will offer burgers, pasta, and vegetarian options. The ecumenical church café in one of the downtown rooms offers coffee, tea, homemade cake — a tradition that adds a quiet break option to the market's offerings.
A special feature: The town offers a free shuttle bus from the Neuenbürg city districts (Arnbach, Dennach, Waldrennach) to the city center — this makes travel significantly easier for older citizens and families without cars. A service component that has been lost in many smaller towns.
Neuenbürg is located in the Enzkreis district on the northern edge of the Black Forest, about 15 km south of Pforzheim in the Enz valley. Neuenbürg Castle on Schlossberg overlooks the town and today houses a branch museum of the Württemberg State Museum. The historic town center with half-timbered houses, the parish church, and the market square characterize the cityscape. With the S6 train, you can reach Neuenbürg from Pforzheim in 20 minutes, from Stuttgart in 50 minutes.
