Three-day spring Volksfest in Eichsfeld — May 16–18, 2026
Thalwenden is a district of the Uder rural municipality in the north of the Eichsfeld district, very close to the border with Hesse. The small village with a few hundred inhabitants is located in western Eichsfeld — a region that, due to its Catholic character in an otherwise predominantly Protestant Thuringia, represents a cultural peculiarity. The Eichsfeld cultivates a particularly rich tradition of customs — from pilgrimages and Kirmes celebrations to Carnival parades and Maikirmes festivals.
The Kirmes (from "Kirchweih" – church consecration festival) holds special significance in the predominantly Catholic villages of Eichsfeld. Originally, the Kirmes was the festival celebrating the anniversary of the church's consecration — the day the local church was inaugurated. Over the centuries, it evolved into a secular village festival with amusement rides, a festival tent, dancing, and general revelry. The Maikirmes is the variant at the beginning of the May season — usually on the first or second weekend in May. It opens the festival season in the village and is, alongside the Schützenfest (marksmen's festival) and the autumn Kirmes, the most important date for local clubs.
The Thalwenden Maikirmes 2026 lasts for three days — Saturday to Monday. Whit Monday (May 18, 2026) extends the usual weekend into a longer festival period, as is common in many Eichsfeld villages. The program typically includes: amusement rides (small to medium-sized — chain carousel, bumper cars, children's carousel), food stalls, a beer tent with dance evenings, Sunday mass in the local church, "Frühschoppen" (morning pint/gathering) on Sunday, and a children's program on Whit Monday. The village's clubs — sports club, fire department, heritage society, church choir — jointly organize the program.
The Eichsfeld district is one of Thuringia's smallest but most culturally distinct regions — known for its pilgrimage sites (Klüschen Hagis, Hülfensberg), Baroque churches, a particularly dense network of clubs, and its Catholic heritage. The Uder rural municipality comprises several districts, with Thalwenden being one of the more northerly ones. Visitors to Eichsfeld should definitely experience the traditional festivals like the Maikirmes Thalwenden, the Heiligenstadt pilgrimage, or the Eichsfeld Carnival parades — a cultural world that differs significantly from the classic Thuringian festivals.
The 2026 date falls on the Whitsun weekend — Saturday to Whit Monday. The Uder rural municipality has confirmed the date in its event calendar. The detailed program, including band lineup, list of showmen, and club contributions, will be published in spring 2026.
