Spring festival at the historic Saargau Hof with live music from several fanfares
In the middle of Gisingen, a district of the municipality of Wallerfangen, stands the Haus Saargau, a historic Lorraine farmhouse that serves as a cultural center and event venue. The building is a testament to the region's centuries-old connection with neighboring Lorraine – the Saargau is the landscape between the Saar river and the present-day French border, a transitional area culturally and linguistically for centuries.
The annual Maifest at Haus Saargau is a typical Saarland spring festival with a focus on live music and convivial gatherings. The organizers are the Gisingen and St. Barbara music clubs, traditionally supported by friendly fanfares such as Concordia Wallerfangen and the Nachtigallental Ihn music club. This constellation brings together four music clubs – a program that is otherwise only found at the major Stadtfest (city festivals) in Saarlouis.
The motto of the event, written in the local dialect as "Musik off da Powai" (Standard German: "Musik auf der Wiese/Bühne", meaning "Music on the meadow/stage"), perfectly captures the relaxed character of the festival: it's about making and listening to music together outdoors, without elaborate staging. The music clubs perform alternately, and the audience sits at beer tables or stands in small groups.
A special feature of the Maifest is the opportunity to visit the historic Haus Saargau during the event. The farmhouse, with its typical Lorraine architectural features, is usually only open on specific occasions – the Maifest is one of the best opportunities to get a glimpse into regional building culture.
Wallerfangen is a large municipality with around 9,500 inhabitants in the western Saarland, in the Saarlouis district, directly on the border with France. Gisingen is located on the edge of the municipality, nestled in the hilly Saargau landscape. The rural idyll, the proximity to the German-French border, and the active club life make the region an authentic piece of the Saarland.
The one-day Maifest begins in the afternoon and runs into the evening. Four music clubs take turns on stage. Visits to the historic farmhouse are possible during the event.
