Spring festival of the volunteer fire brigade in the Mosel village of Briedel
Briedel lies between Zell and Pünderich on one of the most beautiful Mosel loops and, with around 1,000 inhabitants, is a classic wine-growing village: steep slate slopes behind it, half-timbered alleys in the valley, and St. Martin's Church on the hill. Against this backdrop, the volunteer fire brigade has been organizing its Maifest for many years, financing a significant portion of the equipment the volunteer team needs in the region.
The concept has deliberately remained simple over the years: a large marquee or an open stage structure on the festival grounds, long beer table sets under the open sky, a bar serving Mosel Riesling from Briedel vintners and draft beer. From the brigade's field kitchen come bratwurst, steaks, fries, and – a classic – the famous spit-roasted piglet. On Sunday morning, the brigade traditionally invites guests to a Frühschoppen with Weißwurst, pretzels, and brass band music.
For Mosel hikers and cyclists on the Mosel Cycle Path, the Maifest is a welcome stopover: those exploring the Calmont or the Moselsteig can stop here and sample Briedel wines directly from the producers. The brigade focuses on a family-friendly atmosphere with no admission fee, offering activities for children on Sunday afternoon and performances by local music clubs.
Even though the Briedel brigade is small, its Maifest has a supra-regional appeal: many former Briedel residents return for reunions, and Mosel holidaymakers from the surrounding resorts of Zell, Pünderich, and Reil mingle with the locals. Thus, the fire brigade festival becomes a unifying spring event every year, marking the start of the long Mosel wine festival season.
The 2026 edition follows the established tradition: opening on Saturday afternoon with a beer tapping ceremony by the fire chief, followed by lively music in the marquee in the evening. Sunday features a Frühschoppen with brass band music and continuous catering until late afternoon.
The festival grounds are centrally located, within walking distance of the vineyards of the Briedeler Herzchen site. Those wishing to combine the weekend with a Mosel hike will find an ideal connection on the Moselsteig trail directly above Briedel.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
