5 km and 10 km city run with start and finish at the market square — children's races and festive atmosphere in the old town
Few city runs in Northern Germany offer a route through such a well-preserved medieval old town as Lüneburg. The approximately 1,200 listed brick houses, the town hall dating from the 15th century, the crooked towers of the main churches, and the picturesque waterways of the Ilmenau form the backdrop for the 5- and 10-kilometer routes. The start and finish are at the market square in front of the town hall, which is transformed into a festive stage with moderation, results board, and catering for the run.
The City Run offers four categories: 5 kilometers and 10 kilometers for adults, as well as children's races over 75, 400, and 800 meters. The 5-kilometer loop leads through the center of the old town with its distinctive squares. The 10-kilometer route adds a second loop with an extended course through the monastery district, the station district, and parts of Bockelsberg. The children's races start in the market square area, so even the youngest participants can benefit from the festive atmosphere.
The City Run is more than just a sporting event. With a start at 5 p.m., the run takes place during the busy late hours of the day, so residents, café guests, and passers-by become part of the action. A catering and after-show zone with music, moderation, drinks, and food awaits the runners at the market square. The adjacent restaurants open their outdoor areas, allowing for celebrations after crossing the finish line.
In 2026, the City Run will have a special dedication: it will be held as part of the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the ARD telenovela Rote Rosen, which has been filmed in Lüneburg since 2006 and has made the city known throughout Germany. Numerous filming locations in the old town are associated with the series, some of which are on the route of the City Run. A special event for the series' anniversary has been announced by the organizer — details will be published in advance.
The route through Lüneburg's old town is one of the most beautiful city run routes in Northern Germany. Runners will pass the town hall, the water tower, the Stintbrücke, Am Sande with St. Johanniskirche, and several other sections of the historic city fabric. A festive stage with moderation, music, and catering awaits finishers at the market square. The children's races are scheduled for the late afternoon so they can be well-attended by the main race audience.
The exact schedule will be published by the organizer about four weeks before the race. The structure follows the proven key points:
