Lucka — Small town in the northern Altenburger Land

Lucka, with around 3,500 inhabitants, is a small town in the north of the Altenburger Land district — already on the border with Saxony, near the city of Borna in Saxony's Leipziger Land. Despite its small size, Lucka has held town status for centuries, a consequence of its economic importance in the mining environment of the Lusatia region. Today, the town is primarily a residential and administrative center, with a well-preserved Pankratiuskirche and a small historic center. The region was traditionally heavily shaped by lignite mining — a history that is now reflected in the partly reclaimed opencast mining lakes around Lucka.

Small-scale Christmas Market

The Lucka Christmas Market is not a major event like the markets in Leipzig or Sömmerda — but rather a small, personal Advent festival in a parking lot near the Pankratiuskirche. Around 15–25 stalls offering Christmas goods, regional crafts, mulled wine, bratwurst, gingerbread, coffee, and cake cater to visitors. What gives the market its charm is the close connection with the Pankratiuskirche and local club life. The City of Lucka coordinates the event, and local clubs — from the shooting club to the youth brass band — participate with their own stalls or cultural contributions.

Advent Concert by the Youth Brass Band

A special highlight is the Advent concert by the Jugendblasorchester Lucka on Sunday, December 13, 2026, at 3:00 PM in the Pankratiuskirche. For years, the orchestra has presented musical programs centered around Advent and Christmas — brass music with youthful verve and classic Advent melodies. Admission is usually free; donations are welcome. The concert is an important link between the market and the church, between club life and cultural work — and the moving conclusion to the Advent weekend in Lucka.

Altenburger Land — Region between Thuringia and Saxony

The Altenburger Land district, in the far east of Thuringia, is a cultural bridge region between Thuringia and Saxony. The district capital is Altenburg, with its famous skat tradition and the Lindenau Museum. Lucka is located on the northern edge of the district, transitioning into Saxony's Leipziger Land. In Advent, the region offers a dense landscape of markets — the Altenburg Christmas Market, the Schmölln Advent Market, the Castle Advent Market at Posterstein Castle, and indeed the small but fine market in Lucka.
