Whitsun Country Festival in the Altenburger Land
Breitenhain is a small district of Lucka in the far east of Thuringia, where the Altenburger Land borders Saxony. What began as a small gathering of country music friends has developed over two decades into one of the most important regional country music festivals in Central Germany. Bands from all over Germany perform on the festival grounds on the outskirts of the village, and small country villages spring up in the adjacent camping area weekend after weekend around Whitsun.
The festival format has proven itself over the years: arrival on Friday, main program on Saturday and Sunday, departure on Whit Monday. Admission includes camping; people dance and celebrate around the stage in the evenings. The atmosphere is familial – many regular guests have known each other for years and travel annually from Thuringia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Bavaria.
In addition to live concerts, line dancing workshops, a small Western market, and interactive activities are integral parts of the festival. The bands follow the tradition of classic country festivals: a mix of country rock, honky-tonk, outlaw country, and German-language country bands. The festival consciously maintains its down-to-earth character – it doesn't aim to be a mass festival, but rather a weekend for dedicated country fans.
The 24th edition in 2026 traditionally falls on the Whitsun weekend – May 23rd-25th. This makes Countryfest Breitenhain one of the early dates in the German country music season and one of the few that consistently holds its festival date at Whitsun. The Altenburger Land itself, with the Skatbrunnen (Skat fountain), the Skat city of Altenburg, and the castles of Posterstein and Altenburg, offers an exciting addition for the journey there or back.
The 24th edition sticks to the proven format: opening on Friday, May 23rd, 2026, with the first live program and open-air stage. Saturday and Sunday are dedicated to country music with several bands per day, line dancing workshops, and interactive activities. Whit Monday is for departure and a relaxed conclusion.
The exact lineup will be announced in spring 2026 – tradition dictates a mix of German country bands and Central European Western acts. Camping is part of the festival experience and included in the ticket.
