Palatinate Handkees Festival in the Lustadt Maiblumenwald with Handkeesbrot, fish dishes, and Bellemer Bier around May 1st
The Loschter Handkeesfescht Lustadt owes its name to the Palatinate dialect word Loschter (Lustadt) and the specialty Handkees (Handkäse), a traditional Palatinate sour milk cheese, served marinated with vinegar, oil, onions, and caraway seeds, making it a regional specialty known in the Palatinate as Handkees mit Musik (Handkees with music).
The Maiblumenwald is a particularly romantic forest clearing on the outskirts of Lustadt, which is transformed into a large open-air festival ground every year for the event. Long wooden beer benches, club pavilions, a central stage, and strings of lights in the trees create a unique atmosphere that clearly differs from a classic festival hall.
The focus is on Handkeesbrot: a thick slice of rye bread with a generous portion of marinated Handkäse. In addition, fish dishes from the Rhine (fried carp, trout, herring) and classic Palatinate side dishes are served. The beverage selection is traditionally dominated by Bellemer Bier, the beer from the Bellheim private brewery. Palatinate Schorle (Riesling with mineral water) is also available.
The Lustadt clubs are the organizers, each managing a stand or an area of the festival grounds. The festival opens on Friday evening with a relaxed atmosphere, DJ Manni will play from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM on Saturday, ensuring a lively mood, and Sunday is dedicated to the traditional Palatinate Frühschoppen with brass music.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in April on loschter-handkeesfescht.de. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
The festival is considered one of the most important culinary season openers in the Southern Palatinate and attracts visitors from the entire region.
