Over 60 readings in unusual locations — the city literature days in the Börde
In Haldensleben, the district town of Börde in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, reading has a special sound. For two weeks in September, literature leaves its usual place on the bookshelf and occupies the city — living rooms, farm gardens, a former grain distillery, churches, shops, a farmhouse, even the barbecue area of a campsite become reading stages. The concept is as simple as it is effective: people don't come to the book, the book comes to the people.
Since its premiere in 2009 — then as part of the Saxony-Anhalt Literature Days — "Literatur findet Stadt" has established itself as a fixture on the central German literary calendar. More than 60 readings per edition, plus concerts, lectures, staged readings, city tours, and culinary-accompanied evenings: the Haldensleben Writing Circle and the city's cultural office have turned the festival into an event that receives attention far beyond the borders of the Börde.
The unusual locations are characteristic. Someone reads from their novel in a farm garden among delphiniums and autumn crocuses — the event is aptly named "Between Delphiniums and Autumn Crocuses." A group strolls through the old town, listening to the city tour "Historically Verified, Fabulously Invented." There's "Market Whispers" on market day or the literary hike "The Time We Take Is the Time That Gives Us Something" — readings that invite their location to be part of the reading experience.
The mix of professionals (established authors like Johann von Bülow with a Loriot reading in 2024) and volunteers (local reading talents, clubs, schools) gives the festival a very special character: less high-gloss literary prestige, more vibrant reading community. As the organizing team emphasizes, it's about "engaging with literature in a small circle" — and about the intergenerational conversation that arises from it.
Haldensleben itself is worth a visit: a baroque cityscape around the market square, the mighty Roland fountain, the Roland monument from 1419 (one of the oldest in Saxony-Anhalt) — and with the District Museum, a respectable cultural institution. The city is located northwest of Magdeburg and is one of the gateways to the vast Magdeburger Börde, that fertile plain that has been the scene of German agricultural and industrial history for centuries. Visitors to the festival should plan an extra day — the readings often lead to the surrounding districts, where churches, village community centers, and farmhouses open their doors.
The next edition of Literatur findet Stadt is scheduled for September 12 to 27, 2026. For two weeks, over 60 venues in Haldensleben and its districts will once again open their doors: living rooms, churches, farm gardens, cafes, pizzerias, the former grain distillery, courtyards, and community centers will become reading stages.
Proven formats are expected to return: the literary city tour "Historically Verified, Fabulously Invented", the farm garden reading, "Market Whispers," staged readings, and readings combined with music and culinary delights. The Haldensleben Writing Circle traditionally presents its own projects, supplemented by guest authors from all over Germany.
The complete 2026 program is expected to be published around mid-July 2026 on haldensleben.de. Based on previous years, the following are expected:
The names of the invited authors will be announced starting July 2026. Registration is recommended for smaller venues (living rooms, private courtyards) — spaces are limited.
Haldensleben is located approx. 25 km northwest of Magdeburg. By car via the B71/B189; by train from Magdeburg Hbf in 25 minutes to Haldensleben station. The venues are spread throughout the city and its districts — a festival brochure with a map is available at the Tourist Information office on the market square.
Most readings are free or require a small contribution (3–8 €). Some highlight events (e.g., readings by prominent actors) cost more. Registration is recommended for smaller private venues — spaces are limited.
The festival traditionally runs from the second weekend in September to early October. The program booklet is usually published around mid-July on haldensleben.de.
Plan readings at different venues — one in a living room, one in a church, one in a farm garden. Only then will you fully grasp the concept: literature truly finds the city.
