Three days of Mosel Riesling, live music, and street festival below Lieser Castle
Lieser is situated on one of the most beautiful bends of the Middle Moselle, directly below Lieser Castle, one of the most significant 19th-century castle constructions on the Moselle. The Lieser Castle winery has achieved international top-tier status under vintner Thomas Haag in the last two decades, making the surrounding vineyards known far beyond the region. The “Lieser dreht auf” wine and street festival celebrates precisely this connection between historical heritage and vibrant wine culture.
The festival begins on Friday afternoon with the opening at the wine stands of the Lieser vintners. Throughout the weekend, wine stands, courtyard taverns, and club stands line the main street and the market square. Visitors can sample Rieslings from the Lieser Niederberg-Helden, Schlossberg, and Süßenberg vineyards, along with Burgundy varieties and occasional sparkling wines. Mosel bratwurst, tarte flambée, Spundekäs (a cheese dip), and cakes from the club kitchens provide the culinary foundation.
Live music is the second pillar of the festival: bands from the region play on the festival stage on several evenings, complemented by the traditional Sunday morning brass band concert. The location directly on the Moselle and below the nightly illuminated castle gives the festival a unique atmosphere – romantic, convivial, and unmistakably Mosellan.
“Lieser dreht auf” is part of the Mosel Wine Weeks, which feature the most important wine villages of the Middle Moselle with their own festivals in September. Those who stay the whole weekend can easily combine the festival with visits to the neighboring wine villages of Bernkastel-Kues, Mülheim, Neumagen-Dhron, or Wintrich.
