About Lichterzauber

The Lichterzauber-Kirmes is the atmospheric finale of the 2026 Wuppertal fair season. From October 8th to 11th, 2026, the Werth pedestrian zone in Barmen — the district's most important shopping street — transforms into a zone of lights with rides, carousels, food stalls, and illuminated carnival games. A combination of a classic fair and an autumnal, illuminated atmosphere, perfect for the 'Golden October' season in the Bergisches Land region.

The Season Finale on the Werth in Barmen

The Lichterzauber-Kirmes marks the atmospheric finale of the 2026 Wuppertal fair season. While other fair locations in Wuppertal — Berliner Platz Oberbarmen in March, Carnaper Platz at Easter, Zoostadion for the Megakirmes in June — fill the spring and summer calendar, the Lichterzauber event, from October 8th to 11th, 2026, is the autumnal conclusion. Venue: the Werth pedestrian zone in the Barmen district.

The Werth — Barmen's Central Shopping Mile

The Werth is the most important shopping street in the Wuppertal district of Barmen — a long, approximately 800-meter pedestrian zone with shops, cafés, restaurants, and social life. For the Lichterzauber-Kirmes, the entire zone is transformed into a light installation: rides, carousels, food stalls, and sweet stalls are spread along the street. Festive lighting, an autumnal atmosphere, and the contrast between modern shops and nostalgic fairground ambiance.

Fair Programme

The Lichterzauber-Kirmes follows the classic Rhenish-Bergian fair concept:

  • Rides for all ages — carousels, roller coasters, Ferris wheel, children's rides
  • Food stalls with bratwurst, fries, potato pancakes, pizza, Asian specialties
  • Sweet stalls with candied almonds, cotton candy, chocolate-covered fruit
  • Shooting galleries and throwing games with plush toys as prizes
  • Beer stalls and cocktail bars
  • Festive lighting as a trademark — hence the name 'Lichterzauber' (Magic of Lights)

Barmen — Wuppertal's Second City Centre

Wuppertal is an unusual city — formed from the merger of Elberfeld, Barmen, and other districts in the Wupper Valley of the Bergisches Land region. Barmen forms the eastern main centre of the city, with the Werth as its central shopping street, the Wuppertal-Barmen train station, and its own identity distinct from neighbouring Elberfeld. The Lichterzauber-Kirmes on the Werth reinforces Barmen's local identity.

Golden October in the Bergisches Land

From early to mid-October, the Bergisches Land region experiences the season of golden autumn colours — deciduous forests around the city display their red and orange hues, the air is cool but mostly dry, and the light is warm and soft. The Lichterzauber-Kirmes capitalizes on this atmosphere — as the lights of the rides merge with the last sunlight over the Werth at dusk, a special mood is created, distinguishing the fair from its earlier counterparts in the season.

Family Programme

Like all Wuppertal fair events, the Lichterzauber is designed to be family-friendly. During the day, the children's rides and sweet stalls are the highlight for young visitors; in the evening, the festive lighting unfolds its atmospheric effect, attracting couples, groups of friends, and teenagers. Free admission — as with all Wuppertal fair events.
