Christopher Street Day Wuppertal — Demo, Parade and street festival for diversity and queer visibility on Johannes-Rau-Platz
Christopher Street Day Wuppertal, or CSD Wuppertal for short, has been the central date for the queer community in the Bergisches Land region for years. On Saturday, September 12, 2026 — as always on the second Saturday in September — Johannes-Rau-Platz in Wuppertal-Barmen transforms into a colorful stage for demonstrations, shows, and street festivals. The organizer is the Round Table LSBTIQA*, an association of queer initiatives, clubs, and private individuals from the region.
During the day, a demonstration leads through the Wuppertal city center — usually from the Elberfeld city center via Bahnhofstraße to Johannes-Rau-Platz in Barmen. The route varies slightly from year to year. Political demands are the focus: protection against discrimination, self-determination law, protection for queer refugees, queer visibility in schools and companies. Associations, parties, trade unions, queer collectives, and private individuals march with banners, trucks, and dance floats.
After arriving at Johannes-Rau-Platz, the street festival begins. Political speeches, drag performances, DJ sets, bands, and dance groups alternate on the main stage. Around the square, queer counseling centers, health organizations, parties, clubs, and initiatives set up information booths — from Aidshilfe Wuppertal and Schlau NRW to rainbow family initiatives. Food stalls offer drinks, vegan options, sausages, and sweet snacks.
Wuppertal, with around 360,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in the Bergisches Land region — and despite its location between Düsseldorf and Cologne, it has a very independent queer scene. Several queer bars and initiatives (e.g., Schwulst, CSD-Café), a committed AIDS service organization, and a vibrant alliance of political, cultural, and social actors shape the image. The CSD is Wuppertal's flagship event for the community — it brings together what otherwise happens throughout the year.
Johannes-Rau-Platz on the edge of the Barmen city center is the ideal location for the CSD: central, easily accessible by the suspension railway (Werther Brücke station), large enough for several thousand people, and with political symbolic power (Johannes Rau, former Federal President and long-time NRW Minister-President, came from Wuppertal). The street festival runs all afternoon and evening until about 10 p.m.
As always on the second Saturday in September, CSD Wuppertal 2026 invites you to a demonstration, parade, and street festival. Political speeches, drag, DJ sets, bands, and dance groups on the main stage, information booths from queer initiatives around the square.
