Atmospheric festival of lights in the monastery surroundings of Walkenried as part of the South Harz festival of lights tradition
The Lichterfest Walkenried uses the unique setting of the Cistercian monastery Walkenried as an atmospheric venue. The monastery, part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Mines of Rammelsberg, Old Town of Goslar and Upper Harz Water Management System' since 2010, offers a spectacular architectural backdrop for a light installation with its Gothic cloister, monastery ruins, and monastery forecourt.
The illumination extends over the monastery surroundings and parts of the village center: paths are lined with string lights, the monastery facades are illuminated, and light installations are set up in the monastery garden and on the monastery forecourt. This creates a continuous band of light, making an evening stroll through Walkenried a visual experience.
Food stalls run by local clubs offer warm dishes, drinks, and sweets. A small stage in the monastery surroundings provides space for live music – often in the form of acoustic sets that harmonize with the atmosphere of the monastery ensemble.
The Lichterfest Walkenried is part of the tradition of South Harz festivals of lights, which are celebrated annually in several places in the region – including Bad Sachsa, Wieda, and Osterode. This series is a tourist hallmark of the region and creates a recurring late summer atmosphere that attracts visitors from the entire South Harz region and neighboring areas.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition, once again using the impressive monastery ensemble as an atmospheric backdrop. The light installations are prepared in the days leading up to the festival by volunteers and the community of Walkenried.
