Over 50 cultural events in spring – Premiere Children's Culture Days
The Licher Kulturtage are the largest cultural event in the Hessian brewery and castle town of Lich. Every year in March, over 50 events from various genres are offered: concerts, theater, readings, films, lectures, exhibitions, and workshops. In 2026, the 23rd edition will run from March 5th to 29th, organized by the City of Lich in collaboration with the local cultural cooperative.
This year's motto is 'What if' – an open invitation to think counterfactually and play with the possibilities that art and culture offer. The motto serves as a common thread throughout the program: theater performances about alternative lifestyles, concerts with surprising genre combinations, readings by authors who rethink historical scenarios.
An important innovation in 2026 is the first Children's Culture Days, running parallel to the classic Culture Days. The program is specifically aimed at children and young people with age-appropriate workshops, plays, readings, and hands-on activities. This positions the Culture Days more broadly than before and aims to win over the next generation as an audience.
The events are spread across several venues in Lich's old town – the Rathaus (Town Hall), the Stadtbibliothek (City Library), churches, Schloss Lich (Lich Castle), local cafés, and galleries. This decentralization makes the Culture Days a city experience: visitors wander through the city center from event to event, discovering the historical substance of the town.
Lich is a small town with around 13,000 inhabitants in the Gießen district, located on the edge of the Vogelsberg mountains in Upper Hesse. Lich is primarily famous for the Licher Brewery (Licher Privatbrauerei), one of Hesse's largest private breweries. The historic old town with Schloss Lich (Renaissance castle of the Counts of Solms), the Marienstift, and the half-timbered buildings is cultural heritage and simultaneously the backdrop for the Culture Days.
What makes the Licher Kulturtage special is its duration of almost four weeks – an unusually long festival format. While most cultural festivals end after a maximum of two weeks, the Kulturtage offer a continuous stream of events over almost the entire month of March. This allows visitors to pick individual dates or experience the program in stages.
