Allgäu Summer in the Old Town
The Altstadt-Sommerfestival (ALSO) is one of the most vibrant summer events in the Allgäu region. For twelve days, the medieval old town of Leutkirch—with its narrow alleys, the Bockturm tower, St. Martin's Church, and the town walls—transforms into a decentralized festival zone. Open-air cinema in the museum courtyard, flea markets on the market square, dance balls in the festival hall, arts and crafts in the alleys, DJ sets in the small squares, mountain bike races, and rubber duck races: ALSO is not a central stage, but a lively urban tapestry.
23rd Edition 2026
The 2026 edition is the 23rd since the festival's premiere in 2004. Over the years, ALSO has established itself as a reliable summer fixture, supported by the local community, businesses, clubs, and volunteers. Program highlights for 2026 include the opening 'Leutkirch vespert' (August 5th), the K4-Night for art, culture, commerce, and pubs (August 7th), the Old Town Flea Market with Art Day (August 8th), dance galas in the festival hall (August 9th and 12th), Kids Take Over (August 13th), and the festival finale with outdoor yoga and rubber duck races on August 16th.
Opening August 5th — Leutkirch vespert
The festival kicks off on August 5th, 2026, with 'Leutkirch vespert'—an opening by Mayor Hans-Jörg Henle, followed by a vesper picnic in the old town alleys with bread, cheese, sausage, and Allgäu beer or wine, organized by Leutkirch's restaurateurs. A relaxed, convivial summer vesper to start the festival.
K4-Night on August 7th
The K4-Night ('Kunst, Kultur, Kommerz, Kneipen' – Art, Culture, Commerce, Pubs) is one of the festival's highlights. Shop opening hours are extended, shops become art galleries, pubs and cafés set up outdoor seating, and DJ sets and live bands perform in the squares. The old town becomes an open cultural space until well after midnight.
Old Town Flea Market with Art Day (August 8th)
On Saturday, August 8th, 2026, the traditional Old Town Flea Market winds through the alleys. Private individuals, artists, and clubs set up stalls, evoking the flair of a classic Italian mercato. Alongside the flea market, an Art Day features open studios, artist demonstrations, and craft markets.
Children's Program and Sports
Family-oriented program items: Kids Take Over on August 13th (all day, with children's activities throughout the old town), downhill race and kids' race by TSG cycling club on August 15th, outdoor yoga and rubber duck races on August 16th as the festival finale.
Open-Air Cinema in the Museum Courtyard
On five evenings during the festival, a pop-up cinema will screen films in the museum courtyard—one of the most atmospheric venues in the Allgäu. Screenings begin at sunset; arrive with your family and bring a picnic blanket.
