37th edition of the village and mill festival around the Bartlingsche Mill
The Bartlingsche Mill has shaped the appearance of Leezdorf for generations, a small village in the Hage municipality in the Aurich district. The historic gallery Dutch mill has been maintained by the local mill association for decades on a voluntary basis and is fully functional. At the annual Mill Festival on the second Saturday in August, the mill is the centerpiece of a lively village festival that brings together associations, families, and visitors from all over East Frisia.
With its 37th edition, the Leezdorf Mill Festival is one of the most traditional village festivals in the region. It originated in the late 1980s from the commitment of the mill association to preserve the historic mill and make its significance for village life visible. Today, the festival attracts thousands of visitors and is firmly anchored in the event calendar of Hage and the surrounding area.
The highlight of the festival day is the demonstration of historical crafts around the mill: blacksmiths, clog makers, basket weavers, spinners, and bakers present their skills. The mill itself runs depending on wind conditions and grinds flour, which visitors can purchase directly. Guided tours explain the history and technology of the gallery Dutch mill, and the mill association provides insights into the voluntary maintenance work.
The day traditionally begins with a parade through the village, followed by an official opening. At the festival grounds by the mill, local associations, the fire department, and farmers' wives offer food stalls with East Frisian specialties — Mettwurst, Frikadellen, shrimp rolls, coffee, and cake. In the evening, the festival tent invites you to dance with a local band.
The 37th edition of the Leezdorf Mill Festival combines the preservation of historical mill heritage with a lively village festival. The mill association and local associations jointly create a program that connects generations.
