The Laurentiuskirmes Daun is by far the largest Volksfest (popular festival) in the Vulkaneifel and is one of the most traditional patron saint fairs in the Eifel region. With five days of festivities, two connected fairgrounds, and a rich program, it is the social and cultural highlight of the summer in Daun.
Five Days of Volksfest Atmosphere
The Kirmes is open from Saturday, August 8th to Wednesday, August 12th, 2026. This unusually long duration makes it a multi-day meeting point for the entire region – families, clubs, acquaintances, showmen, tourists.
Two Fairgrounds and Connecting Road
The Laurentiuskirmes uses:
- Fairground 1: Classic main square with large rides.
- Fairground 2: Expansion with additional rides and stalls.
- Connecting Road: Equipped with stalls, snack stands, confectionery stands, and game stands.
This division creates space for a particularly large offering of showmen and stalls.
Grand Fireworks Saturday, August 9th
The highlight of the first weekend is the grand fireworks on Saturday, August 9th, 2026. Tens of thousands of spectators line the town center and the fairgrounds; the fireworks stage the Eifel atmosphere and form a visual climax of the Kirmes night.
Laser Show
In addition to the fireworks, a laser show is part of the program. With this, the Kirmes expands its spectrum with a more modern visual element and also appeals to younger target groups.
Sankt Laurentiusmarkt on August 12th
On Wednesday, August 12th, 2026 – the traditional market day after the patron saint's feast – the Sankt Laurentiusmarkt enlivens the town center. Market traders offer goods, regional products, crafts, and artisanal products. Thus, the Kirmes combines with centuries-old market tradition and creates a special closing day.
St. Lawrence – Patron Saint of the Town
St. Lawrence (August 10th) gives the Kirmes its name. As the patron saint of Daun, he has shaped the Kirmes for centuries. The connection between the church's feast calendar and secular Volksfest tradition is typical for the predominantly Catholic Eifel regions.
Daun – Town with Kirmes Tradition
The town of Daun, the district capital of the Vulkaneifel district, has a long Kirmes tradition. With the Laurentiuskirmes as the summer highlight and smaller events spread throughout the year, the Kirmes culture shapes the town's self-image.
