Langgrün Spring Market

"Spring Awakener" since 1858

The Langgrün Spring Market has been an integral part of the Thuringian spring festival calendar since 1858 — a tradition of over 165 years. The market takes place every year on the Sunday after Easter — on April 12 in 2026. Around 50 market stalls gather around the community building in the center of Langgrün, a district of the small town of Gefell in the Saale-Orla-Kreis.

Tried and Tested and New — Market with a Long Tradition

The offerings are "a mix of the tried and tested and new," as the official description puts it. Some traders have been coming for decades — household goods, clothing, tools, leather goods, sweets — others complement the range with seasonal novelties and handicrafts. Local clubs offer food and drinks, with bratwurst stands, coffee, and cake awaiting visitors.

Spring Awakener for East Thuringia

In the region, the market is known as the "Spring Awakener" — the first major market festival after the long winter. Between 1,000 and 1,500 visitors come annually from the Saale-Orla-Kreis, the nearby Vogtland, and Bavaria to experience the start of the season.

Gefell and Langgrün in the Saale-Orla-Kreis

The town of Gefell (around 2,100 inhabitants) is located in the south of the state of Thuringia in the Saale-Orla-Kreis, on the border with Bavaria and Saxony. The district of Langgrün (around 250 inhabitants) is a small village northeast of Gefell's town center — typical of the hilly Vogtland foothills with a mix of agriculture and forestry. The annual market is one of the few major events that makes the small village known beyond the region.
