132nd edition of the largest Volksfest (popular festival) in the Südpfalz region with a wine village, amusement park, and market.
The first Landauer Maimarkt took place in 1894 – since then, the Volksfest has become a firm fixture in the spring calendar. With its 132nd edition in 2026, Landau in der Pfalz will once again celebrate spring, wine, family, and the Palatinate way of life for nine days. The very setup on the Alter Meßplatz at Nordring/Fortstraße is a city event: a Ferris wheel, carousels, rides, a festival tent, and market stalls are erected within a few days, forming the largest temporary festival area in the region.
The heart of the Maimarkt is the Weindorf. Here, Palatinate vintners and wineries present their latest vintages – Weißburgunder, Riesling, Rosé, Spätburgunder, and Sekt. The open atmosphere, long benches, and daily live music program make the Weindorf the living room of the Südpfalz. Tastings, glass pours, and conversations with the vintners are the focus. The Fressgasse (food street) complements the offerings with Palatinate Saumagen (pig's stomach), bratwurst, tarte flambée, vegetarian specialties, and international street food stalls.
The amusement park delights families and young people: a Ferris wheel with views of the Palatinate Forest, a classic chain carousel, modern thrill rides, a haunted house, bumper cars, and numerous children's rides. The market, with over 200 stalls, offers everything from household items to curiosities. A dedicated archery range completes the offerings.
The opening parade on April 25th starts at the town hall and leads through the city center to the festival grounds – led by Mayor Dominik Geißler. Family Day on April 29th offers reduced ride prices and Punch and Judy shows. On May 1st, the traditional Frühschoppen concert musically kicks off the day; in the evening, the Paw Patrol mascot visits the younger guests. The finale on May 3rd features a concert by the brass band from the partner city Landau an der Isar. Throughout the festival week, Palatinate bands, dance groups, and school orchestras perform.
The Maimarkt is not only Landau's largest Volksfest but also an identity-shaping event for the entire Südpfalz. Palatinate clubs, schools, wine cooperatives, and artists use the stage to present themselves. Economically, the Maimarkt provides a significant boost to gastronomy, hospitality, and retail.
The 2026 edition marks the 132nd Maimarkt and focuses on compact tradition: proven Palatinate festival culture, wine, Volksfest atmosphere, and family program. The organizers, the City of Landau and the Showmen's Association, have further optimized the festival area; the Weindorf remains the musical center with daily changing bands.
The event opens on Saturday, April 25th, 2026, with the traditional parade from the town hall to the festival grounds. The official keg tapping takes place in the tent, and the first glasses of wine are poured. The following nine days offer a packed program of live music, children's activities, and culinary experiences.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in spring 2026. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
