The Alter Meßplatz is a few minutes' walk from Landau main train station. Parking is available in the city center's parking garages – heavily frequented during the festival days, public transport recommended.

133 Years of Festival Tradition

The Landauer Herbstmarkt looks back on over 130 years of history. With its 133rd edition in 2026, it is one of the oldest continuously celebrated folk festivals in the Palatinate. Like many Palatinate autumn markets, it has its roots in autumn cattle and flea markets but evolved into a pure folk and wine festival during the 20th century.

Alter Meßplatz as Festival Grounds

The Alter Meßplatz between Nordring and Forstraße has always been Landau's central festival site. The Spring Festival and other major events also take place here; during the Herbstmarkt, it transforms into a cohesive festival landscape, easily accessible from the city center.

Wine Village, Food Mile, Flea Market, and Funfair

The festival's concept is multi-faceted. In the Wine Village, vintners from Landau and the Southern Palatinate serve wine – Riesling, Burgundy, Cuvées, and the first Federweißer (young wine). The Food Mile features snack and specialty stands: Palatinate classics like Saumagen (pork stomach), Spießbraten (roast pork on a spit), Flammkuchen (flatbread), alongside international street food offerings. The Flea Market offers the traditional assortment of historical fairs: household goods, sweets, leather goods, clothing. The Funfair with a Ferris wheel, carousels, bumper cars, and other rides attracts families and young visitors in particular.

Opening by the Wine Princess

On Saturday at 3 pm, the reigning Wine Princess and city officials officially open the Herbstmarkt on the stage in the Wine Village. A keg tapping ceremony, welcoming remarks, and musical accompaniment mark the festive start.

Regional Significance

With its nine-day duration and broad program spectrum, the Herbstmarkt is one of the most visited folk festivals in the Southern Palatinate. It attracts visitors from the entire region, Alsace, and Baden-Württemberg, shaping the September landscape of the city of Landau.
