About Monastery Run

The Lamspringe Monastery Run is a traditional running event in the monastery community of Lamspringe in the Hildesheim district. Organized by the Harzklub Lamspringe branch, the routes lead from the Waldstadion through the Lamspringe woods – a scenically attractive region at the transition from the Hildesheim countryside to the Westharz. The program includes a wide range of distances: 1 km and 2 km for children, 5 km, 8 km, and 13 km for running, hiking, and Nordic walking, as well as 23 km for ambitious trail runners. This diversity makes the Monastery Run one of the broadest running events in the region and appeals to families, hobby athletes, and competitors alike.

Lamspringe and its Monastery

Lamspringe is a monastery community in the southern Hildesheim district, located at the transition to the Westharz. The former Benedictine convent of Lamspringe – today a monastery complex with a monastery church – gives its name to the running event and shapes the identity of the place. Extensive forests surround Lamspringe, offering ideal routes for running, hiking, and Nordic walking.

Harzklub Lamspringe Branch

The organizer is the Harzklub Lamspringe branch – a local club of the Harzklub, dedicated to the preservation and development of the Harz region and the southern Hildesheim countryside. The club organizes various hiking and running events throughout the year, with the Monastery Run being one of its central activities.

Six Distances for Every Need

The range of distances is exceptionally broad: 1 km for the youngest runners (U8), 2 km for children up to U12, 5 km, 8 km, and 13 km as the main distances for running, hiking, or Nordic walking, as well as 23 km for ambitious trail runners. This diversity makes the Monastery Run a family event in the truest sense: grandparents can hike 5 km, parents can run or walk 13 km, children can take their first running steps over 1 or 2 km, and sporty family members can tackle the 23 km distance.

Routes through the Lamspringe Woods

The routes lead through the Lamspringe woods – mixed forests with beech, oak, and coniferous trees, crisscrossed by forest roads and hiking trails. The topographical location at the transition to the Westharz means gently hilly routes, which are more varied than flatland runs and at the same time not as demanding as pure mountain races.

Family and Club Event

Like many classic fun runs, the Lamspringe Monastery Run is not primarily a competition for elite athletes, but an occasion for families, clubs, and hiking enthusiasts. The Waldstadion as the start and finish point provides the infrastructure for catering, warm-up, award ceremonies, and post-event gatherings.

A Tip for the Region

Anyone looking for an authentic running format in the region between Hildesheim and the Harz Mountains that combines sport, nature, and club life will find the Lamspringe Monastery Run a particularly wonderful opportunity. The travel and routes are planned in such a way that the day can be well combined with a visit to the Lamspringe monastery complex or a walk in the surrounding forest.

Monastery Run — edition 2026

The Lamspringe Monastery Run 2026 will take place on Sunday, June 21, at the Waldstadion Lamspringe. The routes lead through the Lamspringe woods at the transition to the Westharz and are gently hilly. Organized by the Harzklub Lamspringe branch. One of the broadest running events in the southern Hildesheim district and an ideal family format.

As in previous years, the Harzklub Lamspringe branch organizes the run in close cooperation with TuSpo Lamspringe and the municipality. The exact program and route details will be announced in spring 2026 on the club's website and in local media.

The mix of running, hiking, and Nordic walking options, as well as the children's races, makes the Monastery Run an event for the whole family.
