Advent Gathering at Schlossplatz and Christmas Market at Museumsplatz in Lahr city center
Lahr/Schwarzwald (approx. 47,000 inhabitants, Ortenau district 08317) is one of the cities in Baden-Württemberg that designs its Advent season with particular attention to detail. Instead of concentrating everything into one large Christmas market, as is common, the Lahr Business Association e.V. has divided the concept into three pillars: the classic Christmas market at Museumsplatz on the first Advent weekend, the extended Advent Gathering at Schlossplatz over four weeks, and the Advent Stroll in the open shops of the city center.
The Advent Gathering is Lahr's daily living room during the pre-Christmas period. On the central Schlossplatz, you'll find lovingly decorated stalls offering mulled wine and punch, tarte flambée from nearby Alsace, handmade gifts, and sweets. It's open Mondays to Fridays from 11 am to 7 pm, Saturdays from 10 am to 8 pm, and Sundays from 2 pm to 6 pm — precisely when locals are returning from work or spending their weekend.
For the little ones, the historic carousel from the Hahn family spins on Schlossplatz every day. On Saturday mornings, St. Nicholas visits the children; a varied supporting program with choirs, school classes, and music school performances fills the stage throughout the four weeks. Various clubs from Lahr and its districts also contribute with small activities — from craft sessions to storytellers.
The actual Christmas Market is found not on Schlossplatz, but at Museumsplatz near the Tonofen City Museum — and only on the first Advent weekend. Here, regional artisans present their work: pottery, wood carving, jewelry, candles, knitwear. A deliberately small, curated concept — no mass-produced goods, but genuine handcrafted products, often available only directly from the maker.
In parallel, the shops in Lahr's city center open during special Advent Stroll hours — especially on Advent Sundays when they would normally be closed. Special promotions, raffles, small live bands in shop windows: the Business Association has refined the concept over years to position the city center against the out-of-town shopping mall.
Lahr is located on the western edge of the Black Forest, where the Rhine plain opens up and the first hills rise towards the low mountain range. For centuries, the city was the residence of the Margraves of Baden-Hochberg and is still characterized today by the city castle, the 16th-century town hall, and the baroque collegiate church. Those visiting the Advent Gathering should at least plan a short stroll through the old town — the fairy lights and shop window displays are worth seeing.
From Saturday, November 28th (1st Advent), to Wednesday, December 23rd, 2026, the Lahr Business Association e.V. invites you to the traditional Advent Gathering at Schlossplatz. For four weeks, the central square transforms into the city's pre-Christmas living room: lovingly decorated stalls with mulled wine, punch, and tarte flambée, the historic carousel of the Hahn family for the little ones, Saturday visits from St. Nicholas, and a varied stage program with choirs, music associations, and school classes.
In parallel, the Christmas Market at Museumsplatz takes place on the first Advent weekend — a deliberately curated, small market with regional artisans: pottery, wood carving, jewelry, candles, knitwear. The city center shops participate in the Advent Stroll with special promotions and sometimes extended opening hours.
Admission to the Advent Gathering and the Christmas Market at Museumsplatz is free. Food and drinks at the stalls are payable — prices at normal Christmas market levels. Deposit on mulled wine mugs with Lahr motif.
