About Schmitz-Theater Eldorado
The Kultursommer Rheinland-Pfalz 2026 is themed „Die Goldenen Zwanziger“ (The Golden Twenties) and supports approximately 250 projects statewide with a total of about 4 million Euros. The programme is dedicated to the multifaceted decade between 1918 and 1933: upheaval and inflation, cabaret and Bauhaus, the women's movement and film art, economic crises and political polarization. In Trier, Schmitz-Theater is part of this programme with the production „Auf ins Eldorado!“.
The title refers to the legendary Berlin „Eldorado“, one of the most famous venues of the Weimar Republic's interwar period. It became a symbol of the cultural energy and vulnerability of those years, a place for queer lifestyles, artistic avant-garde, and societal transgressions. The Trier production uses this reference point to explore questions of freedom, identity, social conventions, and political responsibility in a form that resonates both historically and contemporaneously.
Schmitz-Theater Trier is an established independent theatre group in the city, regularly present in Trier's cultural scene with its own productions. Funding from the Kultursommer Rheinland-Pfalz enables an ambitious production with professional standards.
