Culture for Rostock's South

KulturPumpe Süd is a young cultural initiative that strengthens the cultural life in the Rostock districts of Südstadt and Biestow. Supported by the KulturPumpe Süd association, the series takes place at the SBZ Pumpe – one of the two buildings of the district and community center Südstadt/Biestow, located on Ziolkowskistraße. The series is intended as a regular, accessible cultural offering directly in the residential area.

Low German as a Kick-off

The opening event of KulturPumpe Süd was dedicated to Low German (Plattdeutsch). With Low German speakers Wolfgang Mahnke and Jens Anders, the association gained two performers who gave a stage to the Low German language. Over 40 guests attended the opening – a clear sign that the district's audience is receptive to such an offering.

A Varied Program

KulturPumpe Süd takes place monthly, and the program changes from event to event. Low German, music, lectures, and readings are on the schedule. This offers a diverse cultural program that appeals to various interests and ensures regular encounters throughout the year.

District Culture at SBZ Pumpe

The SBZ Südstadt/Biestow is an important anchor of neighborhood life in the south of Rostock, the largest city in the Rostock district and the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. With KulturPumpe Süd, the Pumpe venue gets its own cultural series that makes the commitment in the district visible and enriches the cultural offerings.

A Young Format

KulturPumpe Süd has been active since 2025 and has quickly established itself as a monthly event. In February 2026, the series was featured on the local radio station LOHRO. It demonstrates how civic engagement can sustainably shape the cultural life of a residential area.
