Festival with a Political Agenda
Kulturcampus Open Air Bockenheim is not your typical Frankfurt summer sound check – it's a neighbourhood and solidarity festival that has been organized since 2023 by a broad alliance of student initiatives, independent cultural organizers, and local political groups. The organizer is the Bündnis Zweite Chance Campus Bockenheim (Second Chance Alliance Campus Bockenheim), an initiative committed to the preservation and cultural use of the former university campus at Bockenheimer Warte.
The Bockenheim Campus as a Venue
The venue is the Bockenheim Campus, the historic university district between Bockenheimer Warte and Senckenberganlage, which became increasingly empty due to the relocation of Goethe University to the Westend and Riedberg campuses and has since been the scene of a persistent debate about its future, culture, and housing. During the festival, the Bockenheimer Landstraße will be closed, with both stages located on the axis between Bockenheimer Warte (North Stage) and Juridicum (South Stage).
Two Stages, Two Sound Worlds
The musical architecture of the festival is clearly divided into two stages. The North Stage at Bockenheimer Warte is home to Hip-Hop, Rap, and Spoken Word. In 2026, Junge Arbeiter, Alyzah, Kuzeng Kerim, and Redd will perform there. The South Stage in front of the Juridicum focuses on Indie, Electro, Cumbia, and experimental music: Nathalie Fröhlich (Electro-Pop), Mate Power (Ska/Reggae/Cumbia), Sinem (Post-Punk), Limes (experimental Andean sounds), and Terbinafin (Rock/Alternative).
More Than Just a Concert
Unlike pure music open-airs, the Kulturcampus festival has a broader structure: flea market, theatre performances, a "Marketplace for Critical Initiatives", campus tours, political discussion rounds on urban policy issues (housing, rents, cultural policy), children's program, food trucks, and catering stands from local associations. New in 2026: a shady chill-out meadow in front of the Philosophicum.
After-Party at KoZ
The event concludes with a DJ set and after-party at KoZ (Kommunikationszentrum) on campus. Experience shows that the party goes on until the early morning hours – a concept that was already established at the first edition in 2023, when the festival, with nearly a thousand visitors, was one of the largest independent neighbourhood festivals of the Frankfurt summer.
Frankfurt-Bockenheim
Bockenheim is one of Frankfurt's densest and most diverse districts, traditionally characterized by the university and an active cultural scene. With the relocation of the main parts of Goethe University, the district is changing rapidly – the festival is an expression of a movement advocating for the preservation of Bockenheim's character as a student-influenced, culturally open district.
