Traditional Kirchweih of the Kübelberg district on the first Sunday in September
The Kerwe — Palatinate dialect for Kirchweih — is the most important date in the festival calendar for almost every village in rural Rhineland-Palatinate. Unlike large city festivals or commercial events, the Kerwe is a thoroughly local festival organised by local clubs that involves the entire village. The Kübelberger Kerwe is a typical example: it takes place every year on the first Sunday in September and combines religious celebration, social gathering, and the voluntary commitment of the village community.
The present-day municipality of Schönenberg-Kübelberg was formed in 1969 through the incorporation of the previously independent villages of Schönenberg and Kübelberg. Both districts have their own parish churches, their own traditions, and also their own Kerwen, which take place at different times of the year. The Schönenberger Kerwe is traditionally celebrated on the Sunday before St. Bartholomew's Day (August 24th), while the Kübelberger Kerwe is held on the first Sunday in September, and additionally, there are the Kerwen of the incorporated districts of Sand and Schmittweiler in October and September.
The Kübelberger Kerwe follows the classic dramaturgy of Palatinate Kerwen: festive church service in the morning in the Kübelberg parish church, followed by an early-morning pint (Frühschoppen) and lunch with Palatinate specialities such as Saumagen, Bratwurst, Leberknödel, Sauerkraut, and homemade desserts. Palatinate wine, beer, and Schorle are naturally included. In the afternoon, coffee and cake are offered, and the evening often features a social programme with live music, a DJ set, or dancing.
The clubs of the Kübelberg district — typically the fire brigade, sports club, music club, and church choir — take turns providing the catering. This tradition ensures that the proceeds from the festival benefit the clubs, thereby financing club activities, youth development, and social engagement in the village.
Falling on September 6th, the Kübelberger Kerwe 2026 takes place on the first weekend of September. The clubs of the district — typically the fire brigade, sports club, music club, and church choir — are preparing for a busy day. Families from the entire village, former residents returning for the Kerwe, and guests from neighbouring districts and municipalities in the Kusel district are expected.
The exact programme for 2026 will be published in advance by the local municipality. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years for a typical Palatinate Kerwe:
Festive service in the Kübelberg parish church. Followed by Frühschoppen in front of the church or in the community hall with breakfast beer and Frühschoppen snacks.
Lunch with Palatinate specialities: Saumagen with Sauerkraut, Bratwurst, Leberknödel, or other classic dishes. Palatinate wine, beer, and Schorle. Catering by the local clubs.
Coffee and cake hour with homemade cakes from the villagers. Family activities with games for children. A meeting of generations.
Evening event with live music, DJ set, or dancing. Social gathering until late into the night.
