Classical concert season in an award-winning concert hall in the Bavarian Forest
The Konzerthaus Blaibach is one of the most extraordinary concert halls in the world. Since 2014, the monolithic and tilted cube designed by architect Peter Haimerl has risen from the middle of the village square in Blaibach, Bavarian Forest. The largely underground hall offers space for only around 200 seats – yet it is counted among the ten best concert halls worldwide, mentioned in the same breath as the Elbphilharmonie or the Sydney Opera House.
The facade of rough granite directly references the history of the place: stones were traditionally used for masonry in the region, and the inhabitants strongly identify with them, as they lived from granite quarrying until the 1960s. The building has received multiple awards, including the BDA Architecture Prize Nike 2016 and the Architecture Prize Concrete 2017. The folded walls and ceilings, as well as the lightweight concrete used for the first time in a concert hall, define the innovative acoustic concept.
The artistic program is presented by Kulturgranit. The season runs from May to December and features world-class artists – including Plácido Domingo, Kian Soltani, Barbara Hannigan, Cyprien Katsaris, Yulianna Avdeeva, and Elisabeth Leonskaja – as well as ensembles such as the Zehetmair Quartet, the Collegium Vocale Gent under Philippe Herreweghe, and the Gaechinger Cantorey under Hans-Christoph Rademann. The program includes masterpieces such as Mendelssohn's "Elias", Bartók's "Bluebeard's Castle", and a silent film "Der Rosenkavalier" with live music.
From May to September, architectural tours of the concert hall take place every Monday at 11:00 AM – an architectural highlight and a popular destination for music and culture enthusiasts in the Bavarian Forest.
Blaibach is located in the District of Cham in the Bavarian administrative region of Upper Palatinate, in the heart of the Bavarian Forest. The fact that a village of this size hosts a world-class concert hall makes the Konzerthaus a unique cultural beacon in a rural area.
