Summer concert series in the Romanesque castle church
The Kulturkirche St. Peter und Paul in Weißensee is one of Thuringia's most remarkable Romanesque churches. Nestled within the medieval town ensemble of the former residence of the Landgraves of Thuringia, it now serves as a concert venue and cultural centre. The high walls, the spacious interior, and the Romanesque barrel-vaulted architecture create exceptional acoustics, making concerts a special experience.
Weißensee itself is a small town in the Sömmerda district — known for the mighty Runneburg, one of the best-preserved Romanesque castle complexes in Central Germany. Although a fire in March 2026 affected the Runneburg, causing temporary closures, the Kulturkirche in the town centre remains intact and fully operational as a central cultural venue.
The Kulturkirche's concert series in 2026 features three main dates. The series «Resonances» kicks off on May 9 — a chamber music evening focusing on the sonic experience of the Romanesque architecture. On June 13, there will be a concert by the Thüringen Philharmonie Gotha-Eisenach — one of the region's important orchestras. The season's highlight on August 28 at 7:30 PM is a concert as part of the MDR Musiksommer 2026: works by Georg Philipp Telemann, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Antonio Vivaldi's «The Four Seasons» with members of the MDR Symphony Orchestra and violinist Alena Baeva. Tickets €25–€35.
The MDR Musiksommer is a renowned summer festival by Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, which has been organizing concerts in extraordinary locations across Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia for decades. The Kulturkirche Weißensee is one of its valued venues — combining Romanesque architecture with top-class classical music.
Violinist Alena Baeva is an internationally sought-after soloist, regularly appearing with renowned orchestras and at festivals. Her interpretation of Vivaldi's «The Four Seasons» in the unique acoustics of the Kulturkirche Weißensee promises an exceptional concert experience — typical of the MDR Musiksommer's commitment to presenting classical music in close proximity to culturally significant sites.
