Exclusive gourmet festival on the North Sea island with star chefs and champagne
While the island of Sylt is overrun by day-trippers in the summer, late autumn belongs to the connoisseurs. The Island Food Festival uses this quiet time to establish itself as Northern Germany's culinary heavyweight — a five-day festival week where the island's leading restaurants collaborate, offering a joint program of dinner evenings, workshops, and excursions.
The events are spread across the entire island and the five festival days. There are clearly defined formats that recur every year:
The festival consciously positions itself in the premium segment. Prices range from around €89 (e.g., oyster excursion) to €1,600 (e.g., Bordeaux vintage dinner with historical vintages). The target audience is clear: connoisseurs who are willing to pay for a unique experience — many guests travel from Hamburg, Munich, Berlin, and Southern Germany, some from Switzerland and Austria.
The island of Sylt in the North Frisia district (state of Schleswig-Holstein) boasts one of the densest fine dining landscapes in Germany. With several Michelin stars per square kilometer, it even surpasses Munich, Berlin, and Hamburg. The Island Food Festival is, in a way, the joint appearance of this ecosystem — a rare opportunity to experience multiple star cuisines in one week.
Holger Bodendorf and his team are curating the festival week again in 2026. The exact daily program — including the individual guest chefs and themed evenings — will be published on the festival website in late summer. Typically, the week starts with an opening champagne evening, complemented by daily morning excursions and star-studded dinners in the evening.
Specific chefs, menu themes, and booking links per date are available at island-food-festival.de. Past editions have included Perrier-Jouët evenings, Bordeaux vintage dinners, and Greek-Austrian themed menus.
By train via the Hindenburgdamm to Westerland (Sylt), then by rental car, bus, or taxi to the individual restaurants. By car via the Sylt Shuttle car train from Niebüll. By plane to Sylt Airport.
Reservations per event via Landhaus Stricker (Festival Main Office): +49 4651 88990 or via the festival website. Very limited spots — early booking recommended.
Several festival hotels offer packages (accommodation + festival tickets). Classic addresses: Söl'ring Hof, Severin*s Resort & Spa, Landhaus Stricker.
