Traditional Main Kirwa on the last weekend of September in the Oberpfalz
The Kirwa Pfreimd takes place in the town of Pfreimd in the district of Schwandorf in the Oberpfalz region of eastern Bavaria. It is traditionally celebrated on the last full weekend of September – the Sunday before Michaeli – and is one of the town's most important festivals, alongside Carnival, the Bürgerfest, and the Advent market. The organizer is the Kirwaverein Pfreimd.
The event kicks off on Saturday with the raising of the Kirwa tree in the market square, accompanied by the town band. On Sunday, a festive church service in the parish church follows, with the participation of the Kirwa couples. The highlight is the dancing around the tree on Sunday afternoon, where the Kirwa couples, in traditional costume, dance around the Kirwa tree.
Live bands provide the atmosphere in the festival tent – from the "Festzeltbrodl'n" on Saturday evening to big band sounds on Sunday and the Kirwa competition on Monday. A traditional market with rides and stalls, as well as Sunday shopping in the old town, complete the festival.
The Kirwa commemorates the consecration of the baroque Church of the Assumption of Mary in 1685 by a suffragan bishop from Regensburg. The "age-old events" make the Pfreimder Kirwa an authentic piece of Upper Palatinate tradition with a long history.
The Pfreimder Main Kirwa traditionally takes place on the last full weekend of September – the Sunday before Michaeli. For 2026, this is likely September 26 to 28; the exact program for 2026 will be determined by the Kirwaverein Pfreimd.
Following the established schedule, the Kirwa tree will be erected in the market square on Saturday (accompanied by the town band), Sunday will feature a festive church service and the traditional dancing around the tree by the Kirwa couples in the afternoon. Live bands will provide the atmosphere in the festival tent; on Monday, the Pfreimder Kirwa competition is scheduled. A market with rides and Sunday shopping will complement the festival.
By car via the A93 (Pfreimd exit). By train to Nabburg or Schwandorf, then by bus.
Free entry to the Kirwa; food and drinks in the festival tent and rides are subject to a charge.
The dancing around the tree on Sunday afternoon is the highlight – arrive at the market square in good time.
