A Franconian Kirchweih in the Hersbrucker Alb
The Kirwa Kirchensittenbach – colloquially “Kirwa Sedderleid” – is one of the typical Franconian Kirchweihen of the Hersbrucker Alb. It is celebrated from Thursday to Monday at the beginning of July and follows the traditional customs that shape the Kirchweih festival in this region.
Program and Schedule
The five-day Kirwa follows the classic dramaturgy of the Franconian Kirwa:
- Thursday – Kirwa opening with beer tapping at the festival tent, evening program in the festival tent
- Friday – Erecting the decorated Kirwabaum by the Kirwaburschen, live music in the festival tent in the evening
- Saturday – Festival tent evening with a dance band and Kirwapaare
- Sunday – Festival service, Frühschoppen, in the late afternoon the traditional Baumaustanzen of the Kirwapaare around the Kirwabaum
- Monday – Kirwa closing in the festival tent with a raffle of the Kirwabaum
Kirwaverein “Sedderleid”
The festival is organized by the Kirwaverein “Sedderleid” Kirchensittenbach. Its name comes from the Franconian dialect pronunciation of the place name. The Kirwaburschen and -madla preserve the typical customs – Kirwabaum erection, Baumaustanzen, Kirwapaartanz – with traditional costumes and headwear.
Kirchensittenbach in the Nürnberger Land
Kirchensittenbach is located in the district of Nürnberger Land in Middle Franconia (Bavaria), in the middle of the Hersbrucker Alb, east of Nuremberg and Lauf an der Pegnitz. The municipality with just under 2,700 inhabitants consists of several districts – including Oberkrumbach, which also cultivates its own Kirwa tradition. The Kirwa in Kirchensittenbach itself is the central, largest Kirchweih of the municipality in the course of the year.
